a must-read if you like books about mountain men
By Thomas Klein
The Shining Mountains is a great historical novel that picks up where Amrose's Undaunted Courage leaves off: the opening of the American West after Lewis&Clark. It is a very entertaining book about human strengths and weaknesses, clashes of native american and euro-american cultures, and about true love and ultimate friendship. Even though this book was written in 1948, it has an openness to it that defies the moral norms of the times in which it was written. Van Everly takes some historic liberties, for example making the fictional hero of Matt Morgan the discoverer of South Pass in 1806, when this wagon route to the west was found by Jedediah Smith and others like him not until the 1820's. This does not detract, however, from the compelling storyline of a man pulled between the lure of the Rockies' wilderness and the home and hearth of his true love. As the story develops, Every weaves in encounters with the likes of Lewis & Clark, his brother, the general Roger Clark, expedition hands Colter and Drouillard, and Manuel Lisa who built a fortune on the backs of beavers (literally) and their trappers, to name a few.

Young man goes west to trade with the Indians in the early 1800s...
By book lover
I'm reading the paperback edition of this book. It has 310 pages and I've read the first 80 as of this writing. I would rate this book so far 3.5 stars. It's reminiscent of The Big Sky by A B Guthrie in that it has a young man heading west to enter the fur trade and trade with the Indians, except this book takes place at the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition and Guthrie's book takes place in the 1830s. I like the story and it has been anything but predictable so far. However, the dialogue does not really convey the times as much as some other authors managed to do, such as Guthrie and a little known author by the name of Jess Shelton. My main complaint is that the author has occasionally mixed up his story (at least that's what it looks like to me). Here are four instances I have come across so far:

p. 68
“She [Nora] wanted practical security for her children, among whom she counted Lydia the dearest, because she was the one most in need of protection.”

--> This is confusing because Nora was Lydia’s daughter, not mother. I think the author messed up here. On page 13 the author writes that their relationship was more like that of sisters, with Nora the older one. Still, that’s sisters, not mother/daughter.

p. 69
“All was different with Lydia’s arrival [birth]. She came into an atmosphere of peace and hope. For her there was awaiting a home.”

--> This sentence contains an error in names. It should read: “All was different with Linda’s arrival….” Linda was the new born baby and Lydia was the mother.

p. 73
Lydia says to Nora in conversation (bottom of page) that she has never seen Matt. But Matt saved the Austin family earlier in the book from Shawnee Indians (chapters 1 - 3) and Lydia would have seen him then.

p. 88
In conversation with Nora (top of page), Matt refers to Frank and Luther as her children. They are her brothers (see pp. 15-16).

Finished the book today. Final rating: 3.5 stars. Overall a pretty good story of a young man whose dream it was to see the "Shining Mountains." Some of the writing (usually related to the romantic dialogue) was a bit too sappy for my taste (I just have a hard time believing people talk like that ... now or then). What really saves the book is the unexpected twists and turns in the narrative. Also, while I had an idea of the ending, I didn't see some of the other details related to it that were quite unexpected and keep the ending from being picture perfect. In fact, I wondered if the author should have gone a step farther at the end ... reader's will probably know what I mean.
