About the Author
Brian Katz is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. He received his BA from Williams College in 2003 with majors in mathematics, music and chemistry, and his PhD from the University of Texas, Austin in 2011, concentrating on algebraic geometry. While at the University of Texas, Austin, Brian received the Frank Gerth III Graduate Excellence Award and the Frank Gerth III Graduate Teaching Excellence Award from the Department of Mathematics. Brian is a Project NExT Fellow, supported by Harry Lucas, Jr and the Educational Advancement Foundation. Michael Starbird is Professor of Mathematics and a University Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas, Austin. He received his BA degree from Ponoma College and his PhD in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has held visiting positions at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, and at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. He served as Associate Dean in the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas from 1989 to 1997. Starbird's mathematical research is in the field of topology. He has served as a member-at-large of the Council of the American Mathematical Society and on the national education committees of both the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America.

Good for both casual interest and beginning professional

I'm not a geologist. Through my high school and college years it bored me. Later in life, living in a geologically diverse area, I began to wonder how terrain was shaped. And I started being uncomfortable with maps in fantasy books -- although I couldn't put my finger on why that was.

This book wasn't the only one on my voyage of discovery, but it's the one I keep coming back to. It's well-illustrated and has reasonable photos that provoke a lot of thought. While most of it is easily read by an intelligent high school student, it doesn't pull any punches, and on occasions dips into detail and distinctions between terms that put me instantly to sleep. (In fact, I keep this book by my bed!) But most of the time I read awhile, think "that's interesting".

This is a long book, and after reading it you will understand more about geology -- or to be exact geomorphology -- than 99% of the people in the world. That's what I call a good investment of time! Also, the thing is dirt cheap. Unfortunately, lol, you'll also see through how flimsy the maps are in ... every fantasy and science fiction novel I've read. That doesn't spoil the enjoyment, but if you are of an enquiring mind, it does confirm your lurking suspicions.

A complete and interesting text about the process that shaped the Earth's face. There are some parts of the text that are almost the same that was written in other books, mainly when the subject is "drainage basin". In spite of that, it is a very good geomorphology book.

An essential early American novel

James Fenimore Cooper's novel "The Last of the Mohicans" (subtitled "A Narrative of 1757"), is a remarkable book for many reasons. First published in 1826, the book represents an early attempt to create substantial literary art from the material of North American history and geography. Although the book has its flaws, it is for the most part a success.
In the novel, the white woodsman Hawk-eye and his Mohican Indian comrade Chingachgook join forces to help the daughters of a white military officer through hostile territory. The story takes place in a colonial American setting marked by conflict between French and English forces -- a conflict that also involves various Indian nations.
There are a number of exciting (and often graphically violent) scenes of battle and chase. Hawk-eye, a white man who, to a large degree, rejects European-American values, is a fascinating figure -- indeed, he is one of the most enduring fictional creations in all of United States literature. Through the mouths of Hawk-eye and the various Indian characters, Cooper offers some intriguing criticisms of white culture.
As I said, the book is not without flaws. The momentum of the book lags for a brief stretch, and some of Cooper's characters (in particular, his women) at times sound a bit stereotypical. But the overall power and intelligence of Cooper's work is undeniable. Particularly impressive is his re-creation of a multilingual world of complex cultural and personal conflict. Also noteworthy is his evocation of the American landscape. A tale of death and survival, of betrayal and loyalty, and, above all, of the extraordinary bond between a white man and an Indian, "The Last of the Mohicans" is one classic that deserves to be read and reevaluated by each generation.

Voice of the Wilderness

Like the Star Wars movies, Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales were written out of sequence. In their chronological order, with their order of publication in parentheses, they are: The Deerslayer (5), The Last of the Mohicans (2), The Pathfinder (4), The Pioneers (1) and The Prairie (3). So if you want to read them in either chronological or published order, you should read Mohicans second. But each novel is self-contained, so if you want to try just one, to decide if the rest are worth reading, then Mohicans is the one to start with, as it is his most famous work and generally acknowledged to be his best.

The hero of these tales, the improbably named Nathaniel Bumppo (or Natty, or Deerslayer, or Hawkeye, or The Long Rifle, or...etc, etc) was the first, and remains the quintessential, all-American fictional hero; brave, noble, honest and more at home in the wilderness than the town. He is not however, the strong, silent type. He has a habit of launching into long, rambling streams of homespun philosophy at the drop of a coonskin cap. Never mind that lead shot is flying thick and fast around his ears, he will lean on his rifle and expound on the different natures of Indians and whites, or the evils of literacy.

The plot of Mohicans is action-packed, but is linear - no surprise twists, and no sub-plots - and contains some highly improbable elements. Well, would you be fooled by an enemy disguised as a beaver? Michael Mann's excellent 1992 screen version reworked the plot extensively, to its advantage.

Cooper was the first distinctively American novelist and was inspired by Walter Scott, the inventor of the historical novel. He was consciously attempting to emulate Scott but, although he writes quite well, he lacks Scott's lyricism. And his characters, specially the women, are resiliently two-dimensional. But he did capture the spirit of the frontier, the pride and pain of a new and growing country, and in doing so created myths out of America's past that have survived, evolved, and have sustained the nation, ever since.

a piece of history

I thought that this was an excellent study of the European-Indian relationships and intertribal relationships among the Americam Indians. There are some gruesome scenes; I feel it is probably a fairly accurate account of practices at that time amongst those tribes. At times the narrative gets wordy because of the details of the history and traditions. I can't believe this book was taught in the 5-8 grades in this country 30 years ago. I don't think the majority of 12th graders could read this book with ease.

I was a little disappointed in the style it was written in, I had bought a different book from this series and loved it. I thought this would be similar, but the book I bought must have been made in the early 2000's. Nonetheless a good read, but not my favorite. And I love spooky books.

Where Ghost Hunting Began

For a book written over twenty years ago, this is an excellent volume for seeing the real beginnings of what we now know as the 'ghost hunting' movement. Most of the reviewed cases, esp. those of Elke Summer and the small 'Green Man', are cases rarely found in other later publications by other authors. Other more commonly visited are given their due space. Contextualizing what was happening is often the difficult part with compilations like these, and this series has a smooth style that combines well the facts and the prose smoothly to the point where it reads less so much as a collection of reports as a series of beloved 'ghost stories'. Be sure to pay attention to the dark, emboldened text captions for the photographs. An excellent companion to the two other spirit-related volumes in the series, Spirit Summonings and Ghostly Encounters. What it may lack in details is understandable for its age, but otherwise a great beginning and introduction just the same.

a recommendation of Category Theory texts for CS/IT

In September 1997 we needed a book on Category Theory for our first year undergraduate class in the B.A. (Mod) honors degree in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) at the University of Dublin, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland. This book was at that time the only one that satisfied our requirements. Now we have chosen (Lawvere and Schanuel 1997) in addition. It is our opinion that one ought to start with the latter, a most excellent introduction of great profundity, and, for application to computing, use the Walters text. It is hard to beat this combination for a first year undergraduate course, as far as we know at this time (Sept.98)

A Very comprehensive textbook for beginners computer sci.

The Book begins with the plain definition of a category, as
does any other book. However, it points out a category as a
kind of (abstract) Data Type. Distributive Categories are
discussed as a milestone for developing the basic concepts
in computation, as those of imperative programs and Data Types.
The Book has a lot of examples (from computation) and the
author took care of drawning conclusions from them before
develop an abstract framework. The concepts of automata
and automata with inputs are shown (the later in a functorial
category). Grammars and Graphs are discussed as well.
The book has a very good introduction to the concept of
freeness and adjunctions. Its latest chapter treats the
computational category theory in the context of Knuth-Bendix
procedure. The exercises present in the book are great !!
They guide the student gradualy into deeper questions without
any frustation. There are very easy exercises which have
the only goal of finding out ones undersating of a new definition.

A Fitting Tribute To The Master

Little did I know what wonders would be found in the package that arrived at my doorstep the other day. I know many of you Franco fans out there are wondering about the quality and research that can constitute a retrospective on the cinema of Director Jesus Franco . Well, look no further for author Stephen Thrower with assistance from Julian Grainger has accomplished this and even more. This is Volume One of ,it seems, a two volume series and this one covers the years of 1959 thru 1974 starting with 'TENEMOS 18 ANOS' and ending with 'LES GRANDES EMMERDEUCES ' aka 'THE COLOSSAL BLOODY NUISANCES '. Each film is presented by year release, alternate titles, production companies involved in the films release, theatrical distributors, a timeline of the shooting date to the theatrical release, cast and credits, full synopsis of the film, production notes, a full review of the film , reflections on the cast and crew, Franco on screen (cameos he appeared in ) the films locations, the films music , connections( where the film echoes other Franco films or ideas of films to come) ,other versions of the film, and press coverage on each film. Had enough? There's more. The book has a forward by actress Monica Swinn, a wonderful introduction to what constitutes a Franco film experience, a section on the Eurocine production company and a conversation between the author and Franco and his muse, Lina Romay conducted in 2010 . There is still more but that's for you to find out. The book is super saturated with rare stills and photos plus 2 color sections which will knock your eyes out. Author Thrower has greatly improved since his other tome 'BEYOND TERROR- THE FILMS OF LUCIO FULCI discussing each films positives and negatives without seeming redundant. It has almost been two decades since the first serious book on the Director 'OBSESSION- THE FILMS OF JESS FRANCO scribed by Lucas Balbo , Peter Bluminstock and Christian Kessler was published and since then , hard to find prints of his films have become readily available thru DVD and BLU-RAY making this series of books long over due and we are blessed that Stephen Thrower and Julian Grainger have taken up the gauntlet. Don't let the book's price throw you off, it is worth the treasures found within it's massive bulk and I think I read that it is a limited edition so act fast. Alongside author Tim Lucas's quintessential tome on Director Mario Bava 'ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK', this first volume on Director Jesus Franco is essential for fans and film scholars alike and it would be a tragedy for any serious genre fan to be without it.

A must-have for fans of Jess Franco and fringe cinema

Beautiful work... well put together, with a ton of photos. Exactly what one expects from Mr. Thrower by now. His writing is always detailed, intelligent and thoughtful. This is serious scholarship, yet written with much wit and charm. This is obviously not for everyone, as Franco's work is certainly an acquired taste. But for those who recognize how truly unique and mesmerizing Franco's vision was, this book is absolutely indispensable. It's hard to imagine a more ambitious examination of his work. I can't wait for volume 2... or the second volume of Nightmare USA, for that matter.

Absolutely brilliant.

This is the book Jess Franco fans have been waiting for... well, half the book, anyway! 2016 seems so far away, now that I know I have to wait until then to savor volume two of this magnificent appreciation of one of European cult cinema's most polarizing figures. Thrower's clear, incisive writing is a pleasure to read from beginning to end. He manages to convey enthusiasm without coming off like a total fanboy and he challenges many of the assumptions made about Franco and his work. The end result is engaging and insightful, but never dry and stuffy. From my point of view, this is the finest thing yet written about the director in English - and happily, the quality of the production from the publisher at Strange Attractor matches the quality of the content. There are some terrific images here, a number of which I have never seen before, and the reproduction quality is outstanding. Now all that remains is for me to anxiously await volume two... Bravo, Stephen Thrower - you've done Franco and his cinema proud.
