About the Author
Thanks to horses Michael Bevilacqua left behind a standard life in the city to follow his heart. It was a reconnection to horses, nature and his true self. Quickly drifting further from standard training methods he discovered the beauty and simplicity of allowing honest relationships with horses. Through his business, Equi-Forme, based in Quebec, Canada, he adhered to his own way of training and instruction and positively changed the lives of many horses and people. To promote the welfare of the horse, he helped to build the international side of Nevzorov Haute Ecole and became the Senior Representative. As a writer, his articles have touched the hearts and minds of horse owners around the world. His horse training business has been replaced with educating people. Regarded as a true master and a gifted teacher he is sought after to give seminars that help to bring out the best in our horses and ourselves.

A Complete Perceptual Shift

The message this book provides is shared through insightful and touching personal accounts of the author's journey of discovery with horses. What is the message? Perhaps these excerpts will provide clues:
pg. 22
"We do not need to mimic horse aggression for a horse to know that we are angry or want him to move away or run. Likewise, being relaxed and inviting is not a replication of a mare allowing a horse back onto the herd. It is simply being relaxed and inviting. No pretending. No facade."
pg. 141
"Was he trying to claim my space and being dominant? No, of course not. In addition, I was not assuming that he had to move away from me in the smallest way by reversing roles. That type of horse behaviour remained between horses but no longer applied to our relationship."

"One has to reach out and be open to the other. It can be with people, with horses, or any other animal. It takes time for a relationship to develop. It must be honest or heartfelt, and although we may have the notion that is what we want, there can be no agenda. It cannot be made to happen, it just happens."
Seeing into the soul of a horse forever alters one's desire to "use" them for our own whims and desires, and pretty well puts us off employing traditional training regimes or tinkering with so-called "Natural Horsemanship" methods, both of which to one degree or another use pain and coercion to create a yielding, compliant horse which will "respond, perform and cause no harm like a well-trained robot".
M. Bevilacqua's message to his readers is that each moment with every individual horse offers novel ways of learning, the way that friends learn together as opposed to shaping and moulding a horse into predetermined levels of training methodology.
Using creativity and intuition with an understanding of science and biodynamics, this book shows how the relationship between human and horse charts an entirely new course, rather than employing new techniques within which "horses were expected to do the same things as always". What M. Bevilacqua is writing about is a complete perceptual shift, which reawakens within us a world of beauty, reminiscent of how we, as children, perceived the world with openness, love and irrepressible wonder.
In addition to showing readers the way to a new manner of being with horses, this book challenges us to peer deeper into some other aspects of human nature that hinder true togetherness with horses, and relays a lot of extra elements to contemplate.
BEYOND THE DREAM HORSE is, however, a book which would profit greatly under the guidance of a frank and competent editor who would encourage a rewriting of certain incongruent elements and place the various components of the author's manuscript into a more cohesive, flowing manner, greatly enhancing it's readability. It is only because of shortcomings due to a lack of appropriate editing that I refrain from selecting the full bar of stars for this book. In it's present state, I see M. Bevilacqua's work as a three star book with a five star message. I do not regret purchasing it and hope to see more from this author in the future.

Read this book ... for your horses

As a new horse owner, I found myself wandering in the maze of all the training methods and approaches available today. None of them spoke to me ... none of them spoke to my heart. Until now. Yet, the author does not describe an approach or a method. Instead, he shares an entirely different way of being with horses. Michael Bevilaqua truly loves horses and candidly shares his many experiences of feeling and thinking differently about standard horse training. He heard what the horses were saying to him and found that it is possible to have a relationship based on mutual trust and love - to share a unique language. This book tells the story of how he left behind the old ways and set out on a new path, without force, bridles, pressure of any kind, dominance, or restraint. Having ultimately found his way to Nevzorov Haute Ecole (NHE) and becoming the School's Worldwide Representative, he clears up common misunderstandings about NHE, its research, and its unique way of being with horses. Michael's writing is clear, open, honest, and heartfelt. Novice or old hand, if you have horses in your life, you owe it to them to read this book.

Moving and Heartwarming

Beyond the Dream Horse is a moving first person account of one man's journey onto a different path with horses, a path of authentic relationship without dominance, force, or pain to control the horse, and without "training" in the usual sense. The author shares one true story after another of the encounters with horses that led to moments of insight and forever changed his perception and interactions with these highly intelligent and noble beings.
The greatest struggle for me in writing this review was how many stars to give Beyond the Dream Horse. Certainly I would urge everyone involved with horses to read this book. It is extremely rare to find writing with such a horse-oriented perspective and open-hearted attitude. But, in theory, a 5-star rating implies that a book couldn't be better... and, in my opinion, this book *could* be more wonderful than it already is. Nevertheless, I gave it the full complement of stars because of the subject matter -- an authentic relationship with horses -- and point of view. As one reviewer noted, "Beyond the Dream Horse" has a 5-star message. However, the book as a whole leaves me wanting more.
What more do I want? Well, for one thing, photos. "Beyond the Dream Horse" would have been greatly enhanced by the inclusion of photos of the horses who share the author's life, and his daily interactions with them.
And, I think the book would have benefitted greatly from some empathetic editing. A good editor might have encouraged the author to go deeper into certain of the stories and into some aspects of relationship with horses. At the very least, good editing would have improved the readability of this work.
My hope is that there will be a future edition of this book, with photos !!!, and that we will have more works from this gifted horseman and talented writer.
