Not completely useless

I was attracted to this book by all the positive reviews, but now that I've read the book, I have to wonder if the good reviews are all fake. They all say "verified purchaser" but they all read as if they're written by the same non-native English speaker and all within a couple of weeks of each other. The book was free for awhile and maybe that's when "they" all "purchased" the book.

In any case, I found that the book's explanations are abbreviated--like someone who was trying to demonstrate their knowledge instead of teaching it--and often non-sensical or incorrect. The organization and writing would also be confusing to a PowerShell beginner, I think.

I learned a couple of things I didn't know before, which is why I say the book isn't completely useless, but it's not worth $2.

Replete with errors! Do not buy!

Wow! The book is replete with errors.

1.In chapter 3, under the sub-heading "Quotation Marks," Matthew refers to the "gave," when he meant to say grave (by-the-way, it's pronounced grah-vay, NOT grave as in the burial site).
2.There are countless places in the text where spaces are omitted between words. How did your spell checker/grammar checker not catch this, or did you use one? For example, in the second chapter, paragraph 2, there are multiple cases: "type inGet-Help", "for exampleGet-Help," and another case of "type inGet-Help" at the end of the paragraph. Good grief.
3. The results of his little exercise towards the beginning of chapter 3 is totally wrong from what I got in the ISE. Test your example to make sure it is correct!

At this point, I didn't even bother continuing with the book. This many errors in the first three chapters comes off very unprofessional and sloppy.

About the Author
LAWRENCE LEVY is a Silicon Valley lawyer and executive hired by Steve Jobs in 1994 as CFO and member of the Office of the President of Pixar Animation Studios. He was responsible for Pixar's business strategy and IPO and guided Pixar's transformation from a money-losing graphics company into a multibillion-dollar entertainment studio. He later joined Pixar's board of directors. He then left corporate life to study Eastern philosophy and meditation and their relevance to modern life. He now writes and teaches on this topic and cofounded Juniper Foundation to pursue this work. Originally from London, England, he earned degrees from Indiana University and Harvard Law School. He lives with his wife, Hillary, in Palo Alto, California.

A very fun, readable, educational, and enlightning book.

Lawrence Levy is to blame for my lack of sleep last week. This book was for me a real page turner, as Levy narrates his move to Pixar, and his involvement with Steve Jobs and the folks at Pixar to make the leap from a long struggling startup to a mega force in the entertainment world - a company that would change the world.

Levy has a very readable style of writing - casual, but not in a gee whiz sort of way that is all too common for insider books like this one - from non professional writers. Levy takes us behind the scenes of how Pixar was turned from a company with great potential in to the entertainment powerhouse of our generation. I knew a little about this from watching a DVD called Pixar Short Films Vol 1, but Levy provides so much more detail, particularly with regard to Steve Jobs (and his own) personal transformation through his involvement with Pixar, from both a creative and a business standpoint.

I've met Lawrence at several Juniper mediation events, but do not know him, so it was especially fun for me to read about his motivations and more recent personal transformation from hi-tech/entertainment executive to working to help found and fund the Juniper (juniperpath.org) organization. A big thumbs up for a great story and a great read.

A business thriller with heart

Well written, full of humanity, and hard to put down, To Pixar and Beyond is an engaging read. I was surprised at the number of obstacles Levy and Pixar needed to overcome on the way to success. This one immediately shouldered aside the five or six other books I had open in my Kindle app; highly recommended, and not just for those interested in business.

Great Read!

First I must admit I am a little biased, I have met Lawrence before and work for one of his former employers. So there are references in the book that strike a cord and made me smile, however I did not expect to connect to the book as much as I did. Having in the past year seen Steve Jobs the motion picture where in the end of the film he is just getting back to Apple and they show that Jobs was becoming more of a human being than the tyrannical person he was known to be. I learned that Lawrence and Pixar had something to do with that and it filled in a lot of holes that the film could not fill in due to time. On top of that I learned a lot about a company that I have come to love and trust because my twin girls had grown up with their films and many smiles were had because of the connection they had with so many of the characters.
If you want to learn more about the almost mythical Steve Jobs plus how one of the most successful start ups to come out of California came to being then this is the book for you.

Perfect book for my purposes

We just hired a nanny from Ethiopia and her English was minimal. I got this so that she could work on improving her vocabulary in her free time. I also got a monolingual picture dictionary, but she seems to use this one more than that. The book is easy to use as it goes both ways (Amharic-English/English-Amharic). Nice to know that amazon.com is carrying titles like this. Keep it up!

I'm stationed in Ethiopia. This book was great i bought one used it to pick up so many ethiopian chicks i had to give it away as a gift so i bought another and met my wife........Ethiopian ofcourse.

Best Dictionary Out There

I learned some Amharic from Ethiopian friends at high school and college. I was rather fascinated by the deep rich culture. This dictionary is just plain amazing. It includes both English-Amharic and Amharic-English sections, and utilizes the actual Ethiopian alphabet and phonetic guide.

For an English speaker, I would recommend getting copy of the alphabet displayed in grid format, and run though memorization of the alphabet with an indigenous speaker. This way, you'll be able to utilize the dictionary to the fullest potential.

The best Hebrew lexicon available

Benjamin Davidson's Analytical Lexicon is accurate and detailed and provides the researcher with every form of every word found in the Hebrew Scriptures. Its one drawback is that the print is extremely small. Over the past thirty plus years since purchasing my copy I have referred to this lexicon frequently and have never failed to track down a word or its meaning. I've been quite satisfied with it.

The first part of this book contains a description of the various verb forms as well as declensions of the nouns. While this is helpful for the student who already has a knowledge of Hebrew grammar, this should not be seen as a substitute for a prior understanding of the grammar. I would suggest that a student learn the rudiments of Hebrew grammar before attempting to use this lexicon.

Wonderfully helpful

I have found this book extremely valuable, even indispensable, as a companion to reading the Hebrew bible. Well, a live teacher would be better, of course, but, failing that, this book is a fine friend, parsing every word that looks funny to me. A measure of its effectiveness, I suppose, is that I need to use it less and less and less, as I learn the grammar and gain confidence that the lexicon will parse the word just as I've done!
