Ford's Last Readers

I find it very sad that this great novel has again gone out of print, perhaps never to reappear after Everyman had to put it on remainder. Granted, as the reviews below note, it is written in an elliptical manner with time shifts, interior monologues as substitutions for action scenes and other moderist devices which make this book, like the Ulysses of Joyce, for instance, or Woolf's To the Lighthouse, God help us all, a challenge to the reader. And let's face it. Only critics like, or claim to like, a difficult book. Parade's End has never been a best seller; it has never been a modest seller. But behind the challenge is a heroic life given to us fearlessly, without irony or cynicism; a story that simultaneously beats on us and disintegrates before our eyes; and, built accretively, below our consciouness until the final novel, the tapestry of all the dross and glory of our own lives--all this the result in large part, no doubt, of these very modernist devices (while Lighthouse shows us that modernism can be an empty stage too). Tietjens stands with Adam Bede as one of the most memorable and noble characters in English literature. We care about him, which is exactly why the modernist style maddens us here--we need to know what happens to him, to be rushed to the finish. But Ford will not let us. We have to be pulled deep into Tietjens, to experience as our own all of his humiliations, to hold hard and unbending with him in intuitive dignity against the moral folly of others and the emptiness through which they are hurtled. Toward the end our reading slows. He is become our strength, our safe harbor; we cannot let him go. I know of no more powerful multi-volume work after Proust, not Musil, Powell, Durrell, etc., than Ford's Parades's End.

This Book is Obscure For No Good Reason.

One of the greatest books EVER written in the English language. Period. (Well, actually, it's four books, but they don't publish them separately anymore.) FMF is a modernist genius in the order of a Faulkner or a Woolf, with a beautiful style, incredibly human characters, and a mind-boggling knowledge of both the human heart and the physical world. FMF seems to be as quasi-omniscient as his noble last Tory, the main character, Christopher Tietjens. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say that it's an easy book. Parade's End not a potboiler to read at the beach while you're getting a tan and sipping margaritas. It is a book that challenges the reader to let go of expectation and any hope of conventional structure, and to allow FMF's unique storytelling to settle into your gut slowly. It is a moral novel that doesn't moralize. A book about what it is to be good, to be a human being. FMF's beautiful style is even exceeded by his love for humanity and generosity of spirit. The sheer uncynicalness of the book--especially in this hollow, cynical age--is like a balm on this reader's eyes. This is one of those books, like Sound & The Fury, like Ulysses, like Pride & Prejudice, like Great Expectations, that EVERYONE should read.

A tragedy of change, well told

Ford Madox Ford wrote prolifically, with a repertoire which experimented with style, character and narrative across a variety of settings and subject matters. Ford's Parade's End is among the very best of his works. The centerpiece, Christopher Tietjens, seems on the surface to represent a now-commonplace theme in English literature--the "last English gentleman" metaphorically swept away by modernity in the aftermath of the First World War. The first of this set of novels, "Some Do Not", features an opening passage which is laced with brilliant satire, crystal-clear character development, and a style which is utterly accessible and utterly enchanting. Through the rest of this novel, and well into the next volume, Ford seems to be telling a straightforward "passing of the noble old things" story. But Ford Madox Ford is rarely so straightforward, and these novels are no exception. What seems to begin as a mere bemoaning of a passing age turns into a demonstration of the inevitability, and even the desirability of its passing. Although Ford creates a perfect foil to Tietjens to apparently illustrate the vulgarity and superficiality of the modern age, things are not so simple. Tietjens views his world as irreparably fading, but Ford understands that Tietjens' world may never have existed at all. Galsworthy's Forsyte Saga and CP Snow's Strangers and Brothers novel cycle both try to show the passing of "old England" and the marching in of modernity. Neither Snow nor Galsworthy, though each is wonderful, does as much with narrative style as Ford does here. Ford's novels seem to take a simpler approach to the topic by creating Tietjens, the representative of the "old order", and his wife Sylvia, the representative of the "new", but by the time that the plot is worked out, the reader comes to understand that Ford has created a hall of mirrors and metaphors, and nothing is as simple as it seems.
This is one of the great must-reads of 20th C. English literature. It's a shame that it's not required Brit lit reading in every college survey.

How the Mighty Have Fallen

I read The Beach a few years back and, predictably, loved it. It was well-written, plot-driven, and had all the makings of a classic.

Because of this (and because I never got into Tesseract), I decided to pick up The Coma. I figured that greatness was Alex Garland's MO, and expected another wonderful book.

Needless to say, The Coma disappointed me thoroughly. The story is boring; it's fleshed out in a tepid way and has the feel of a book written by a six-year-old with a fertile imagination. As a short story, this could've worked. As a novel, it falls flat on its face, probably into a coma.

If Lyme or tick borne disease affects your life, this is the book to read......

The comments for Compendium of Tick Borne Disease (TBD) already expressed by others are accurate and beyond. Perhaps this volume will do for the issue of tick borne diseases what William Osler's 'The Principles and Practice of Medicine' did for general medicine. However, this volume is readable for both for physicians and non-physicians alike. Dr. Spreen has done magnificent job of informative writing for a wide audience. Terms and concepts are defined so one doesn't need medical training to comprehend the complex issues with TBDs. Her personal writing style makes what could be dull reading, instead fascinating reading. I'm a physician with Lyme and considered myself literate on the subject, until I began to read this text and now realizing how little I know. This is the book badly needed by both physicians and those (or loved ones) suffering with tick borne diseases. Public libraries, medical school and teaching hospital libraries need this copy on their circulating shelves and in their reference section. Consider petitioning your local acquisitions librarian to obtain a copy(s). This volume can be made available to everyone if public libraries will acquire it. Lyme/TBD in general are so controversial and the disease presentations so variable that my impression is that anyone suspecting they have Lyme should self-educate. The information in this book imparts knowledge and wisdom for a very costly disease and I believe in the long run will not only save money, help understand the illness(es) and guide one in decisions about effective treatment. The author is well qualified to write this well researched text and has inside knowledge from everything from personal experience with TBD in self and family, to research, writing and the current medical milieu in which Lyme is embroiled. Kathy's sacrifice to write this book is no small gift to those who suffer from tick borne diseases. Thank you, Dr. Spreen.

Valuable resource for clinicians who are serious about helping patients

Dr. Spreen's book "Compendium of Tick-Borne Disease: A Thousand Pearls" is an excellent example of the valuable insights about a disease that can result when a doctor, or someone close, becomes the patient. Dr. Spreen developed a serious case of Lyme disease and her son almost died from a co-infection with Lyme and Babesia, providing the motivation to undertake this Herculean effort, which took advantage of her background in public health and medical research, and her experience as a practicing physician. The book represents a distillation and interpretation of the clinical literature on tick-borne diseases, primarily Lyme and related disease, as well as the opinions and practices of doctors who are dedicated to treating them. The field is a mess, with profound gaps in knowledge about the causative organisms, disease pathophysiology and treatment regimens, and is further complicated by political and economic aspects. The result has been the development of competing camps that have extremely different views, with the biggest source of contention being the existence and treatment of chronic disease. Dr. Spreen makes a strong case for aggressive treatment of both acute and chronic disease, and is particularly critical of a wait-and-see approach, rigid clinical practice guidelines, lab-dependent diagnosis, the requirement for erythema migrans (the supposedly characteristic bulls-eye rash of Lyme disease), inadequate duration of treatment, over-reliance on monotherapy, the failure to consider tick-borne disease besides Lyme, and the failure to consider concomitant tick-borne disease (which has become very common). She repeatedly emphasizes the need to listen to the patient and to make a clinical diagnosis. The book focuses on the needs of clinicians who are serious about treating tick-borne diseases, and provides extensive guidance for their diagnosis and treatment. The "pearls" in the title are side-notes that are interspersed throughout most of the pages and serve to emphasize, clarify, summarize and give examples. The writing style is very personal, and while not typical for a medical textbook, is very effective in delivering the message and engaging the reader. Sometimes things appear to be repetitive, but this is probably because the book is expected to be used as a go-to reference more than to be read cover-to-cover. I think it is going to be very interesting to see how this book is received, and hope it is not ignored because it has so much potential to help improve the treatment of tick-borne diseases--which are significantly under diagnosed and under treated.

Support Group Leader Gives Two Thumbs Way Up!

Dr. Spreen's book is a Godsend to patients, caregivers, and physicians alike. I heard her describe what the book covered while at another event and I purchased it immediately without reserve. As the Founder of the Howard County Lyme Awareness group, I have read many books about Lyme and tick-borne diseases and tried myself to sift through the endless amounts of research and theory without confident success. Kathy Spreen has sifted through all this for us and presents it in such a palatable way. She is a master at taking those hard to comprehend medical terms and ideas, such as in the "Gentle Immunology" chapter and helping the lay person grasp it.

I have recommended this book to the patients and families that attend my support group and events as well as to several physicians, who were incidentally thrilled to find something so comprehensive and have since purchased the book themselves. I have also recommended that people take this book along to their physician and gently encourage them to consider specific courses of action based on the research shown in the text.

As someone with Chronic Lyme herself, caregiver to 2 children with Lyme & Tick-Borne Diseases, and a leader of a local support group, I cannot recommend this book high enough and that is why I give it two thumbs WAY UP!

A pathetic excuse for a book

This is the worst book I have ever read. If I could give this book zero stars I would.

The book is written on a 7th grade level. It was clearly thrown together without any effort to polish a hastily composed initial draft. The book is is incoherent. Often I was left scratching my head--what did she mean to say?

The author Ms. Marks is keenly capable of self-promotion, which is why the lead material catches your eye and makes you want to buy it (probably many of the 5 star ratings on this book are from her own inner circle and herself). And there is an occasional sentence in this book that is well written, which proves that the author may be capable of writing reasonably well.

The book is insulting to read. The author is perfectly comfortable gouging the reader for $5 after giving the bare minimum effort writing it. This author appears content to take the path of absolute minimum effort to take your hard earned money. She takes no pride in her work.

By way of example, here is a quotation from the Kindle edition of the above-referenced book on iphone, location 522 of 1241:

"I'm going to offer it at maybe 14K is going to be my goal because that is actually what I need to provide the project or to actually send things off. If I'm doing an album and yes, I'd like a hundred K, but really I can get it done for 10 grand, and I can provide all digital stuff that doesn't cost me money to ship or produce."

While there are worse sections, this is a pretty typical excerpt from this book. As readers can see, it is painful to read.

There are other crowd funding books out there that give similar crowd funding advice and are written by normal standards of clarity. Please do not waste your money on this book.

Crowd-Funding Money maker

The book is a quick read but it is really full of helpful hints, examples and insight. It was obvious that the author, Patrice Williams Marks, really knows what she is talking about. I think crowd-funding is a brilliant idea and one anyone considering going into business for themselves or that has an idea but not the cash to get it started need to know about and this book is a must read. I know the first thing I asked myself was, "What is crowd-funding?". Crowd-funding is a new trend using various websites (Kickstarter being one of the most popular) and it works by helping people that have great ideas but don't have the money to fund them. These people can pitch their ideas to the public in hopes that they will donate money to help fund them. I had watched a TV show once in the past that was basically crowd-funding. People try to convince the "sharks" to invest in their business. Kickstarter is a website that basically does the same except you are not on TV.

This helpful little book walks you step-by-step into the process of creating, launching and wrapping your project. In this book you will learn:

I thought this was a pretty brilliant book and really enjoyed reading it. I hadn't heard about Kickstarter or anything before reading this book so I did a little background work first to find out what exactly crowd-funding and Kickstarter were. I recommend this book to anyone with an idea or to other "How To" people like myself. It flows easily and is written in everyday words so it's not too technical to understand. I don't have any complaints about the book but one small thing. It had a couple grammatical errors in it and that was one of her helpful hint to success. Other than that this book is a great read and full of very helpful information.

A Quick Read BUT Chockful of Crucial Information!!!

I was recently involved an Kickstarter campaign and reading this book would have saved us a lot of time and energy as first timers. You hear about the phenomenal successes of other peoples campaigns but then you reflect on the reality that the majority of campaigns fail. Where does one begin? Read this book, people!

Even though the title includes the word "hacking" there is nothing scammy or underhanded here. Just tried and true legitimate methods for making your campaign count whether it be a new consumer product, a book, a film or movie. It's all possible now if your idea is good and you can get the backing.

This was a breezy and engaging read that'll get you started in the right place. Great tips on how to find an audience and build buzz in the run up to your project's launch...and how to continue and increase that buzz post-launch.

In summation, if you're considering kickstarter or indiegogo to fund your project don't start in the middle of nowhere without a map. You need a helpful friend in your corner. With this little book in your hip pocket, you've got that friend and she's there helping you through. Enjoy and good luck!

Very basic / sparse information

This book tries too hard to cover too many topics and ends up providing relatively basic information on a wide variety of things, without being able to go deep in any. It is targeted towards a networking novice, so introduces some very basic concepts. While there is some focus on Cisco products, most of the information is outdated and too high level to be meaningful (you can get more current / detailed information on the Internet). It would have been more useful to stick to a few core subjects around routing/switching, and explore more in-depth what specific Cisco products can do, and how to use them effectively.
