The most successful service businesses understand this very well and spend much time and effort working to better understand their customers and to meet their spoken needs and often unspoken wants.

To understand how Lean concepts can be applied to a service business, you need to know a little about Lean Principles, Lean Rules, Lean Questions and Lean Tools. Read on …

LEAN SERVICE includes case studies showing how Lean Service has been applied in companies as diverse as Deutsche Post DHL, DirectSki.com, Grant Thornton, Irish Rail, Musgrave Group, Openet, Parker Advertising and Thornton Partners.

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable, by Patrick Lencioni

In The Five Dysfunctions of a Team Patrick Lencioni once again offers a leadership fable that is as enthralling and instructive as his first two best-selling books, The Five Temptations of a CEO and The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive. This time, he turns his keen intellect and storytelling power to the fascinating, complex world of teams.

Kathryn Petersen, Decision Tech's CEO, faces the ultimate leadership crisis: Uniting a team in such disarray that it threatens to bring down the entire company. Will she succeed? Will she be fired? Will the company fail? Lencioni's utterly gripping tale serves as a timeless reminder that leadership requires as much courage as it does insight.

Throughout the story, Lencioni reveals the five dysfunctions which go to the very heart of why teams even the best ones-often struggle. He outlines a powerful model and actionable steps that can be used to overcome these common hurdles and build a cohesive, effective team. Just as with his other books, Lencioni has written a compelling fable with a powerful yet deceptively simple message for all those who strive to be exceptional team leaders.

Amazon.com Review
Once again using an astutely written fictional tale to unambiguously but painlessly deliver some hard truths about critical business procedures, Patrick Lencioni targets group behavior in the final entry of his trilogy of corporate fables. And like those preceding it, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team is an entertaining, quick read filled with useful information that will prove easy to digest and implement. This time, Lencioni weaves his lessons around the story of a troubled Silicon Valley firm and its unexpected choice for a new CEO: an old-school manager who had retired from a traditional manufacturing company two years earlier at age 55. Showing exactly how existing personnel failed to function as a unit, and precisely how the new boss worked to reestablish that essential conduct, the book's first part colorfully illustrates the ways that teamwork can elude even the most dedicated individuals--and be restored by an insightful leader. A second part offers details on Lencioni's "five dysfunctions" (absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results), along with a questionnaire for readers to use in evaluating their own teams and specifics to help them understand and overcome these common shortcomings. Like the author's previous books, The Five Temptations of a CEO and Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive, this is highly recommended. --Howard Rothman

From Publishers Weekly
In keeping with the parable style, Lencioni (The Five Temptations of a CEO) begins by telling the fable of a woman who, as CEO of a struggling Silicon Valley firm, took control of a dysfunctional executive committee and helped its members succeed as a team. Story time over, Lencioni offers explicit instructions for overcoming the human behavioral tendencies that he says corrupt teams (absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability and inattention to results). Succinct yet sympathetic, this guide will be a boon for those struggling with the inherent difficulties of leading a group. 100,000 first printing.

From Library Journal
Building a cohesive team is not complicated, declares Lencioni, president of his own management consulting firm and author of The Five Temptations of a CEO. Departing from the dry, theoretical writing of many management books, he presents his case in the context of a fictional organization, and in doing so succeeds at communicating his ideas. The story is about a female CEO who is hired to bring together a dysfunctional executive staff to work as a team in a company that just two years earlier had looked promising. The scenarios that follow are recognizable and can be applied anywhere teamwork is involved, whether it is a multinational company, a small department within a larger organization, or a sports team. The five dysfunctions discussed are absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. At the end of the story, the main points are summarized, and clearly written suggestions and exercises are offered to help bring about change. Concise and easy to follow, this book is recommended for academic and public libraries with management collections and for anyone who is a member of a team that needs improvement. Finally! Another VERY helful and applicable management book!
By Manny Hernandez
By dedicating 90% of his book to a so-called leadership fable, Patrick Lencioni very effectively conveys the very essence of the model he proposes in order to deal with dysfunctional teams. Though the story he presents is that of a hypothetical newly appointed CEO of a distressed start-up and (in the beginning of the story) her highly dysfunctional executive team, the model is perfectly applicable to any team throughout most organizations.
The model consists of a pyramid with the five dysfunctions of a team (from the bottom, up):
1) Absence of trust: stemming from an unwillingness in the team members to be vulnerable and genuinely open up with one another about their mistakes and weaknesses.
2) Fear of conflict: inability to engage in unfiltered, passionate (yet constructive, though it may strike you as odd) debate.
3) Lack of commitment: no buy in and commitment can be expected when ideas and opinions have not been aired and genuinely taken into consideration prior to a decision.
4) Avoidance of accountability: without commitment to a clearly defined set of goals, team members will hesitate to call their colleagues on their actions and behaviors that are counterproductive for the team.
5) Inattention to results: Lencioni brings it all home through the realization that avoidance of accountability leads to a state where team members tend to put their individual needs above the team's collective goals.
Throughout the last leg of his book, Lencioni contrasts how dysfunctional teams behave by comparing them to a cohesive team in the case of each of the five dysfunctions. He also provides suggestions on overcoming each of the dysfunctions and insights into the role of the leader in this process, all in a very structured and to-the-point way. Complementing this, he provides a Team Assessment tool to help determine where your team is at in terms of each of the five elements of the model.
As much as the book can be digested without too much trouble in 2-3 straight hours, it is inevitable (unless you are fooling yourself or you operate in a very healthy team) to have your managerial wheels in your mind turning at full speed by the time you are done with it. As a manager and an avid reader, I welcomed this book with open arms because I found it to be very useful and readily applicable. Now comes my challenge in putting it to use.

This book is helpful to anyone who serves on a team and specifically helpful for team leaders. You will see yourself and your team in this book. More than that, you will find specific steps you can take to make your team better. Through a real life fable, Pat leads you through the steps you need to take to move a team from dysfunction to health. You will find a clear model as well as examples that are as relevant as your last meeting.
As I read this book I discovered:
1. A vocabulary I can use with my team to discuss dysfunction.
2. A self-analysis that will get the discussion started.
3. A clear model for implementation.
As a team leader, this book challenged me to:
1) Lead selflessly
2) Take risks
3) Encourage conflict
4) Embrace the power of meetings
4) Direct my team around a common theme
This book is simple, practical and filled with wisdom. Highly recommended.

Good framework for ensuring you have a healthy work environment
By Jonathan Licis
I found this book to be Patrick's best - An easy read with a great structure for keeping your team healthy. Strongly recommended if your team has more then its fair share of politics. If you have this, start at the first dysfunction and work your way up!

Summary - A start up has just hired a new CEO, an older woman with operational experience in bricks-and-mortar companies where she had to deal with a dysfunctional team, including one especially venomous worker.

The framework of the 5 Dysfunctions:

* The first dysfunction is an Absence of Trust. This happens when team members are not open with one another about their mistakes and weaknesses.
* This sets the tone for the second dysfunction - The Fear of Conflict. Teams that lack trust are unable to engage in unfiltered and passionate debate of ideas. Instead they resort to veiled discussions and guarded comments.
* The lack of healthy conflict is a problem because leads to the third dysfunction - Lack of Commitment. Without having aired their opinions in the course of passionate and open debate, team members, rarely, if ever buy in and commit to decisions, though they may feign agreement during meetings.
* Because of this lack of commitment, team members develop the fourth dysfunction - Avoidance of Accountability. Without committing to a clear plan of action, even the most focused and driven people often hesitate to call their peers on actions and behaviors that seem counterproductive to the good of the team.
* Failure to hold one another accountable create an environment that leads to the fifth dysfunction - Inattention to Results, which can thrive where individuals put their needs (ego, career development, or recognition) above that of the team.

Some additional nice bits from the book:

* Trust lies at the heart of a functioning, cohesive team. Without it, teamwork is impossible.
* Trust is the confidence among team members that their peers intentions are good, and that there is no reason to be protective or careful around the group.
* Teams that lack trust spend inordinate amounts of time and energy managing their behavior and interactions within the group.
* Members of teams with an absence of trust: Conceal their weaknesses and mistakes from one another, Hesitate to ask for help or provide constructive feedback, Hesitate to offer help outside their own areas of responsibility, Jump to conclusions about the intentions and aptitudes of others, without trying to clarify them, Fail to recognize and tap into one another's skills and experiences, Waste time and energy managing their behaviors for effect, Hold grudges, and Dread meetings and spend time to avoid spending time together
* Vulnerability based trust cannot happen overnight. It requires shared experiences over time, multiple instances of follow-through and credibility, and an in-depth understanding of the unique attributes of team members.
* Leader must risk losing face and being vulnerable in front of the team so that the team can do likewise.
* It's ironic that so many people avoid conflict in the name of efficiency when healthy conflict saves so much time compared to back-channel attacks and maneuvering.
* Teams that fear conflict: Have boring meetings, Create environments where back-channel politics thrive, Ignore controversial topics that are critical to the team success, and Fail to tap into all the opinions and perspectives of team members
* Monuments of truth are best handled by face-to-face, not email.
* Big issue "a fractured team is like a fractured bone; fixing it is always painful and sometimes you have to re-break it to heal it fully. And the re-break always hurts more because it is intentional"
* "it is very possible that some of us here won't find the new company to be the kind of place where we want to be"
* 2 rules of a meeting: be present and participate.
* Questions to know people better: Hometown. Number of kids. Childhood hobbies. Biggest challenge in growing up, first job, etc.
* Politics is when people choose their words and actions based on how they want others to react rather than based on what they really think.
* No trust = No Open Conversation = Artificial Harmony.
* If people don't unload, they won't get on board.
* Listen, Assess, then DO!
* Disagree and Commit!
* Every great movie (meeting) has conflict.
* You will fight - about issues. But that is your job.

SING from the diaphragm! Project your voice into your mask! Sing into your head cavity! Sing out of your forehead! WHAT?? After centuries of artful singing, voice teachers continue to teach these—and other—misguided techniques? And to make this situation even more ridiculous, not only has science shown these practices to have NO basis in reality, trying to learn them actually inhibits and even erodes vocal ability. This nonsense must end!

Far too many singing students have been brainwashed by their teachers into believing in this harmful mythology and, as a result, have been taken, in short order, from artistic promise to vocal bankruptcy. It’s hard to fathom all the shattered dreams and abandoned careers—not to mention the incalculable loss of talent. Who knows how many Frank Sinatras, Ella Fitzgeralds, Luciano Pavorottis, and Stevie Wonders have been lost because of ruinous vocal training? As a voice student, I was one of the casualties of harmful instruction. “Reputable” and charismatic singing instructors convinced me that they possessed the key to achieving vocal excellence. But despite my determination to become a better singer, my voice—once naturally strong and capable—was rendered weak, reedy, and wobbly. It was only after creating my voice-building system—a program guided by reliable and tested scientific ideas—that I fully understood the errors of my teachers’ ways and was able to build into my voice new power, resonance, and range. As I began teaching a wide range of singers, and observing the spectacular improvement in their vocal quality and vocal ability, I soon realized that introducing my revolutionary voice-building system to the world was going to be my life’s mission.

Over the past twenty years, I have had the privilege of building the voices of many of the greatest artists of our time; now I am making my voice-building system available to all singers—to both beginners and seasoned singers alike. A Revolution In Singing is the groundbreaking way to exceptional vocal power, beauty, and freedom; as well as a path to a deeper understanding of the soul of this wonderful art form. If you love great singing and want to arrive at new levels of vocal achievement, then you are in for wonderful adventure. This book will be your guide on the journey. Learn from it, apply it, and then sing your heart out!

Forget everything you learned about singing
By Asim
Having extensively practiced with a multitude of singing programs and teachers, I came away learning more with each one. However, after reading through this book I realized that in order to further develop my voice I would have to unlearn all the information I accrued in the past - from lip bubbles and "NG," "MMM, and "Nay"-nasal sort of exercises, to singing in the mask and deploying diaphragm support. It became abruptly clear as to why I had never heard of Gary Catona - his system contradicted mainstream singing ideology so much it bordered on esoteric. The irony is that everyone can benefit from these simple exercises.

Catona is one of the few modern voice teachers whose exercises reside solely in the five Italian vowels. This immediately gives him credibility in the current milleu. The system is comparable to weight-training in that your voice is a muscle to be coordinated and built, using weights (the vowels) to increase stress and become stronger. The only other other vocal teacher I am aware of who uses his weight-training analogy is Anthony Frisell, who emphasizes a top-down falsetto method. Catona, on the other hand, deploys a bottom-up chest voice method whereby the singer sings from the back of the throat with a lowered larynx. (It is also interesting to note that Catona lost his voice as a result of falsetto training. Kindred spirits in ideology, polar opposites in execution - think Ralph Nader and Ron Paul.)

The first time I practiced sliding these vowels in the back of my throat, I felt a vocal resonance, deepness, and power in my voice - speaking and singing alike - that I never experienced before. In my opinion, this experience is comparable to "the pump" so often spoken of in weight training - impressive to behold, but merely a temporary display. Thus, after just a month of training with this system, it becomes imperative to continue practicing.

What I disliked about book is that it seems secondary to the new voice builder app, which includes demonstrations of all the exercises. Because I do not have an iPhone or iPad, I resorted to buying an American Idol singing DVD that included demonstrations. As a manifesto, the book contains so much valuable information and insights that I have to give it five stars. Highly recommended to anyone seeking a superior path to building your voice.

Advice From A Top Vocal Teacher
By BOB B.
I had been searching for a teacher who believes, as I do, that the voice is a muscle and like any other muscle needs to be developed. The book explains the foundation of Mr. Catona's voice building system. Is this a technique for everyone? Perhaps not, but I throughly enjoyed it and definitely have benefitted by reading it. I was surprised to find out how different Mr. Catona felt about different aspects of singing, compared to other teachers but that willingness to stand up and defend his differences of opinion, made it all the more enjoyable. Vocal technique has got to be one of the most multi-opinionated topics known to man. It was great to read something from someone who believed so strongly in the effectiveness of their technique.

Great Method, Wonderfully Written Book
By cussmop
I am a professional singer and have been a student of Gary's for twenty years. His method has enabled me to maintain a healthy voice and to sing with ease throughout my range. Singing is very much an athletic event, so during the initial phases of applying this technique there may be some slight gruffness (for lack of a better term). But when one begins any workout routine that is to be expected. That quickly gives way to results, and those results accrue at a steady pace. For me, they manifested themselves almost immediately during my first concert sung after beginning Gary's technique. I suggest that anybody who reports a problem is singing incorrectly, exactly the kind of thing that Gary's technique will prevent. Furthermore, his presentation of how and why this technique is correct is both entertaining and convincing. The voice, hidden inside you, is an instrument of mystery. In this book Gary Catona dissolves that mystery.

The Fuck Up, by Arthur Nersesian

Arthur Nersesian's underground literary treasure is an unforgettable slice of gritty New York City life.

This is the darkly hilarious odyssey of an anonymous slacker. He's a perennial couch-surfer, an aspiring writer searching for himself in spite of himself, and he's just trying to survive. But life has other things in store for the fuck-up. From being dumped by his girlfriend to getting fired for asking for a raise, from falling into a robbery to posing as a gay man to keep his job at a porno theater, the fuck-up's tragi-comedy is perfectly realized by Arthur Nersesian, who manages to create humor and suspense out of urban desperation. "Read it and howl," says Bruce Benderson (author of User), "and be glad it didn't happen to you."

From Library Journal
Okay, the narrator really is a fuck-up. Barely employed as an usher at a Village cinema, he falls for a colleague who seems dewily innocent even as he continues dumping his dirty clothes on girlfriend Sarah's floor. Then all in one day he loses his job, his chance for new love, and Sarah herself and winds up sleeping on the coach of a friend who's probably even more of a fuck-up than he is. From here he moves swiftly through trying to score, trying to keep his job at a porno theater by pretending that he's gay, and somehow getting himself involved in a robbery. Nersesian, a former editor at a literary magazine called The Portable Lower East Side and an English instructor at a community college in the Bronx, writes briskly and acutely, with a good sense of detail. At least he's not a fuck-up. But this isn't exactly the "slice of gritty New York life" promised on the cover. Despite the narrator's many astonishing escapades, it's really kind of bland.ABarbara Hoffert, "Library Journal"

Review
The Village Voice [A] terrific novel....The charm and grit of Nersesian's voice is immediately enveloping, as the down-and-out but oddly up narrator...slinks through Alphabet City and guttural utterances of love.

Paper Nersesian creates a charming everyman whose candor and sure-footed description of his physical surroundings and emotional framework help his tale flow naturally and therefore believably.

Hal Sirowitz author of Mother Said A Trainspotting without drugs, New York style.

Time Out For those who remember that the eighties were as much about destitute grit as they were about the decadent glitz described in the novels of Bret Easton Ellis and Jay McInerney, this book will come as a fast-paced reminder.

Smug Magazine Touted as the bottled essence of early eighties East Village living, The Fuck-Up is, refreshingly, nothing nearly so limited....A cult favorite, I'd say it's ready to become a legitimate religion.

Jennifer Belle author of Going Down Having "grown to tolerate all of New York's degradations," Arthur Nersesian's main character is irresistibly charming, funny, and real. Nersesian's writing, reminding me at times of John Patrick Shanley and Gogol, is beautiful, especially when it is about women and love. The Fuck-Up is a terrific success.

Grid Magazine Not since The Catcher in the Rye, or John Knowles' A Separate Peace, have I read such a beautifully written book.... Nersesian's powerful, sure-footed narrative alone is so believably human in its poignancy... Nersesian mixes "F" trains, lumpy couches, SoHo lofts, dive bars, lonely divorcees, porn theaters, posh brownstones, embezzling employers, ritzy Hard Rock Cafe parties, deceitful, would-be kept starlets, bathroom-stall poetry, free Mercedes-Benzes, and even Mormons. Whew! I couldn't put this book down.

Flipside Fantastically alluring! I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

The Best!
By A Customer
Nersesian's first novel is still his best. This book is a raw, madcap, sometimes goofy -- but always fun -- story of a perpetual screw-up who can't catch a break to save his life. Sound familiar? This novel also offers the best tour of downtown New York City since Richard Perez's The Losers' Club. Of all of Nersesian's books, I prefer this one the best. It's a hilarious diamond in the rough. I guarantee you'll be entertained. Also recommended: Dogrun, The Losers' Club by Richard Perez, Post Office by Charles Bukowski

Incredibly entertaining and thought-provoking.

This book is a must-read for anyone interested in contemporary urban literature. But buy the original edition on Akashic Books, available here at Amazon.com. The Akashic edition is the independent edition, and besides, it has great drawings for chapter headings which the MTV Books edition doesn't have (!)

Don't Be Turned Off (Or On) By the Title
By A Customer
This is a really good book with a very bad title. I am a big fan of the artist naming his work whatever he/she wants to without the powers that be asserting their influence, but I think in this case the publishers should have made a fuss. Why, you may ask? Because I think the title effectively drives away many a reader who would really enjoy this quirky little novel and attracts an audience who may be disappointed it's not a lot heavier.
Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of heavy stuff going on in here--embezzlement, death, domestic disputes, psychosis--but it's actually quite an enjoyable read. The novel follows the exploits of a 20-something after his girlfriend breaks up with him and kicks him out of their New York apartment, leaving him effectively homeless. He manages to scrape by through a series of freak occurrences and emerge at the end a little road weary, but essentially none the worse for the wear.
This could be the story of any recent college grad, and that is a little frightening. However, rather than beat you over the head with a bunch of woe-is-me crap, the novel never gets overly depressing and is, in some places, rather optimistic, without being treacly or sentimental.
I really enjoyed this novel. It is well-written, interesting, and hard to put down.

Great for those who want to learn more about the Esmonde Technique and Classical Stretch
By SerenityDiva
I am a fan of Classical Stretch and the Esmonde Technique and was delighted to be able to find out more information on these fabulous health and fitness programs. This textbook has a lot of information to absorb and I really recommend being able to purchase Season 4 as the episodes coincide with each chapter for an even better experience. Miranda shares her history, why she founded Classical Stretch and how it evolved. She further explains why her technique works for a variety of issues from weight loss to improving athletic performance to pain alleviation and prevention and more. There are a lot of photos and diagrams to really learn the anatomy and how her system works with each system in the human body...it's more than "stretching." I feel I get a lot more out of her programs with what I have learned. Also, I found her style to be very engaging, just like I do with the video workouts.

The only caveat is this is not an exercise program book nor is it intended to be (it is a textbook), those looking for a book workout of Classical Stretch or the Esmonde Technique will be disappointed.

Excellent companion to videos
By puddleglum
The Classical Stretch workout is a synthesis of Tai Chi, yoga, pilates, ballet and physical therapy. While gentle enough for rank beginners, it is still challenging enough for Olympic athletes, because you work within your own body's changing capabilities. Proper alignment and absence of free weights prevents injury, and stretching prevents residual soreness often experienced by those increasing their exercise level. There is no equipment to buy, lug or store: you use your own muscles, gravity and occasionally a chair or hand towel.

Besides weight loss, body reshaping and improved posture, the Classical Stretch workout offers prevention of osteoporosis and injury, healing of scar tissue, and maximization of strength, flexibility and range of motion.

It is not, however, a workout in which you simply flail about, imitating the instructor's motions. Instead, the mind must be actively engaged, to target specific muscles being worked, to employ correct technique and alignment, and to visualize the resistance ("lift a concrete ball") or relaxation ("lift a satin ribbon") required to achieve desired results.

Although some verbal instructions in engaging the mind are given in the videos, time is of course limited. The book provides detailed and illustrated instruction in technique (PNF:proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, fascia readjustment, etc.), theory (dynamic vs. static and e-centric vs. concentric stretching, muscle chains, etc.), and anatomy (muscle origin/insertion/action, structure and function of three basic types of joints, etc.). With acute attention to technique, the videos could stand alone. Without the videos, the book is just another anatomy course. For maximizing the exercise benefits and understanding the body's structure and health, the book makes an excellent companion to the videos.

Stretching by the book
By joy4U
This book is the accompanying text for the Classical Stretch Season 4 series. It is truly a textbook and is designed to provide the anatomy and detailed explanations of the techniques used in the Edmonde Technique. While the presentation is dry, the information is quite useful to anyone in the fitness or physical therapy fields.

From Publishers Weekly
Twin 15-year-old siblings Sophie and Josh Newman take summer jobs in San Francisco across the street from one another: she at a coffee shop, he at a bookstore owned by Nick and Perry Fleming. In the vey first chapter, armed goons garbed in black with "dead-looking skin and... marble eyes" (actually Golems) storm the bookshop, take Perry hostage and swipe a rare Book (but not before Josh snatches its two most important pages). The stolen volume is the Codex, an ancient text of magical wisdom. Nick Fleming is really Nicholas Flamel, the 14th-century alchemist who could turn base metal into gold, and make a potion that ensures immortality. Sophie and Josh learn that they are mentioned in the Codex's prophecies: "The two that are one will come either to save or to destroy the world." Mayhem ensues, as Irish author Scott draws on a wide knowledge of world mythology to stage a battle between the Dark Elders and their hired gun—Dr. John Dee—against the forces of good, led by Flamel and the twins (Sophie's powers are "awakened" by the goddess Hekate, who'd been living in an elaborate treehouse north of San Francisco). Not only do they need the Codex back to stop Dee and company, but the immortality potion must be brewed afresh every month. Time is running out, literally, for the Flamels. Proceeding at a breakneck pace, and populated by the likes of werewolves and vampires, the novel ends on a precipice, presumably to be picked up in volume two. Ages 12-up. (May)

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 6-9–Scott uses a gigantic canvas for this riveting fantasy. The well-worn theme of saving the world from the forces of evil gets a fresh look here as he incorporates ancient myth and legend and sets it firmly, pitch-perfect, in present-day California. At the emotional center of the tale are contemporary 15-year-old twins, Josh and Sophie, who, it turns out, are potentially powerful magicians. They are spoken of in a prophecy appearing in the ancient Book of Abraham the Mage, all but two pages of which have been stolen by evil John Dee, alchemist and magician. The pursuit of the twins and Flamel by Dee and his allies to get the missing pages constitutes the book's central plot. Amid all this exhilarating action, Scott keeps his sights on the small details of character and dialogue and provides evocative descriptions of people, mythical beings, and places. He uses as his starting point the figures of the historical alchemist Nicholas Flamel and his wife, who have found the secret of immortality, along with mythical beings, including the terrifying Scottish crow-goddess, the Morrigan; the three-faced Greek Hekate; the powerful Egyptian cat-goddess, Bastet; and Scathach, a legendary Irish woman warrior and vegetarian vampire. While there is plenty here to send readers rushing to their encyclopedias of mythology and alchemy, those who read the book at face value will simply be caught up in the enthralling story. A fabulous read.–Sue Giffard, Ethical Culture Fieldston School, New York City

From Booklist
When 15-year-old twins Josh and Sophie inadvertently become involved in a plot to steal the Codex from their friend Nick Fleming (aka Nicholas Flamel), they are propelled into a fantasy world of golems, wereboars, and many other creatures that inhabit the netherworld between good and evil. Also known as the Book of Abraham the Mage, the Codex contains the secret formula for eternal youth, but that's just one of the book's wild powers that fuel the twins' adventures. Scott offers a classic fantasy, with mythological references and inferences that are well integrated and do not slow down the exciting action. The writing and story line have a flamboyant style that will put readers on the edge of their seats as they rush to the final page, pausing along the way to savor the author's vivid descriptions of worlds and events. Readers will actively root for the good guys in this exhilarating fantasy--if they can figure out who they are. Frances Bradburn

What a find!
By Amazon Customer
They say that out of the mouths of babes...etc. In this case, I borrowed a book from a grandson. He was right. This is a terrific story and a great family adventure. I see that some of these reviews, in fact, most were not necessarily written by young adults. It's always clear. And though I kept in mind as I was reading that this was not specifically addressed to my generation, still I fell under the considerable spell of a really good story which transcended age. When I see a review getting very very literal and probing, even"erudite" I must say, I have my doubts as to the reviewers intentions. I was up for a good read, plain and simple and I got it. The ability for young readers to Google every single character except the twins is unparalleled in fiction. My grandson showed me how and what could be more engaging. It lends a life beyond the story. Great!

Great YA Read
By Brown Thumb
If you're a fan of the Harry Potter novels, you'll probably enjoy this book. Interesting cast of characters. Good use of world building. I'd say this book would probably be appropriate for ages 10-12, boys or girls, all the way to adult. The language is clean. There's quite a bit of violence, but I wouldn't consider it overly graphic, no worse than the Harry Potter books. I did knock a star off because this book ends on a cliffhanger, a pet peeve of mine. It is not a complete story. There's a beginning and middle, but no end. Each of the Harry Potter books had a clear ending, but the thread of the story carried on to the next book. This book deliberately ended in the middle of a dramatic moment, forcing the reader to purchase the next book. I almost knocked off two stars because of this annoying tactic.

Magic, mythology, and fun!
By impossible girl
What do I read after the end (again) of the Harry Potter series? This was a question that I've struggled with for the last few years. Sure, I like some fantasy, but I didn't want to read junk books just for the heck of it (like when the world went crazy a few years ago and it seemed like every book was about vampires). I had two very persistent students who begged me to read this book, as they were reading the series too. They promised me it was good and pleaded with me daily for a week. So, I did it: I downloaded this on my kindle and got to work.

First, I'll say that this is a GREAT book! It kept my interest and I found myself reading late into the night just to finish it. I also ended up grabbing the second book the next day at the library. It was THAT good. Now, a few books into the series, I know I'm hooked. I care about the characters and keep reading to see what will happen to them. Definitely worth the read if you're a fan of the Harry Potter or the Septimus Heap series.

In My Father's House: Africa in the Philosophy of Culture, by Kwame Anthony Appiah

Africa's intellectuals have long been engaged in a conversation with each other, and with Europeans and Americans about what it means to be African. At the heart of these debates on African identity are the seminal works of politicians, creative writers and philosophers from Africa and its diaspora. In this book, Appiah draws on his experiences as a Ghanaian in the New World to explore the writings of these African and African-American thinkers and to contribute his own vision of the possibilities and pitfalls of an African identity in the late twentieth century. Appiah sets out to dismantle the specious oppositions between "us" and "them," the West and the Rest, that have governed so much of the cultural debate about Africa in the modern world. All of us, he maintains, wherever we live on the planet, must explore together the relations between our local cultures and an increasingly global civilization. Combining philosophical analysis with more personal reflections, Appiah addresses the major issues in the philosophy of culture through an exploration of the contemporary African predicament.

Review

"A wonderfully crafted collection of essays."--In My Father's House

"Appiah's book on the place of Africa in contemporary philosophy powerfully exposes the dangers of any simplistic notion of African identity in the contemporary world....Tellingly, his reflections upon the calling of philosophy and the relation between post-traditional and not-yet-modern African culture(s) offer a welcome perspective on the increasingly shrill debates over "multiculturalism" that rend the academy. The epilogue on his father's funeral alone more than justifies the whole book."--Elizabeth Fox-Genovese, Common Knowledge

"Interesting and thought-provoking."--Safro Kwame, Lincoln University

"Montaigne invented the modern essay;...Appiah has the brilliance to extend it."--The Village Voice

"A groundbreaking--as well as ground-clearing--analysis of absurdities and damaging presuppositions that have clouded our discussions of race, Africa and nationalism since the 19th century....Mr. Appiah delivers what may very well be one of the handful of theoretical works on race that will help preserve our humanity and guide us gracefully into the next century."--Charles Johnson, The New York Times Book Review

"Appiah's essays are exquisitely and painstakingly argued."--Washington Post Book World

"An exceptional work, whose contextual sweep and lucidity provide a refreshing intellectual tone away from yahoo populism. In many profound ways, Kwame Appiah's In My Father's House ushers in a new level of discourse on race and culture, placing it within a universal narrative--and where else should it belong?...Without question, a first of its kind."--Wole Soyinka, from Race and the Rout of Reason

"In My Father's House is a remarkable book that brings previously invisible cultural assumptions to the surface and obliges us to rethink our conceptions about African identity. Drawing upon a variety of elegantly analyzed historical examples and relating them to his own personal experiences of the African world, Anthony Appiah convincingly demonstrates the need to go beyond stereotyped notions of race and futile laments about past injustices. His observations about authenticity movements, the persistence of Western constructions of African realities, and the emergence of new syntheses of knowledge among African peoples represent a major breakthrough in the ongoing debate over the future of African culture."--Richard Bjornson, Ohio State University

"This is an absorbing and path-breaking book by a gifted philosopher. Appiah rescues the philosophy of culture from Herder by insisting that we drop notions like 'authentic negritude' and that 'African culture' is the name of an important project rather than of an available datum. The book's range of reference and the vigor of its argumentation are equally impressive."--Richard Rorty, University of Virginia

"Appiah's concern is, he modestly states, 'with the situation of African intellectuals.' In the growing literature on the subject, nobody has defined that situation, as it exists now, more sharply; nobody has built so many bridges to a discourse that might be shared universally. Learned yet unpretentious, serious and witty, critical and kind--this book is bound to infuse debates among African intellectuals with new vigor and to engage philosophers, literary critics, anthropologists and others everywhere. One also wishes it would be read by politicians for its lucid analyses of racism as well as its demonstration of intellectual independence tempered by colonial and post-colonial experience."--Johannes Fabian, University of Amsterdam

Identity ,Solidarity, and the Dilemmas of Modern Africa
By CodyforOrange
Modern Africans find themselves at the juncture of several worlds: As Basil Davidson might have noted, revolution, episodic nationalism, and postcolonial debacles have cast a pall of chaos onto an already historically chaotic field of peoples. The philosophies of Europe, the roots of tradition, African nationalism, Pan-Africanism, racial, tribal and ethnic solidarity, and a modernity which seeks to unleash individualism all come into conflict when Africans attempt to assess the problems they face, and detail solutions for these problems. Kwame Antony Appiah calls African thinkers to take up this important work, and he offers several assessments of these problems and possible solutions in his book. He believes that a better basis for solidarity in Africa is needed to replace decaying philosophies of negritude, and he discredits Pan Africanism's ability to fulfill this role. He addresses the question of what African philosophers should be preoccupied with, and whether, in their seeking to establish, unify, or recreate cultures, African philosophers can really draw upon philosophies and identities unique to Africa. The importance of an "African" identity has emerged since colonialism, and Appiah questions what such an identity should be founded upon, using Wole Soyinka and his own father Joseph Appiah as examples of intellectuals at work on the question.
After a reading of Appiah's book, I question whether an African solidarity can be usefully articulated. Can inclusive, constructive and accessible modern culture be derived in a continent-wide scale, with some collective experience as its sourcebook? Perhaps the question rides on whether tradition is truly expendable, although so far it has apparently not been expendable (although it has proven malleable). Appiah's arguments in favor of reexamining what it means to be African, while he has labored to disassociate them from the Pan-Africanist agenda, seem unsure on the issue of Pan Africanist hopes. Pan Africanism, whether informal or economic, seems more than mired in implied racialism - it seems to ignore the idea that there is a need for modern African nations to promote overture to the world, rather than aggrandized protectionism, which invariable carries with it repressive nationalist agendas. The reality is that Africa is dependent upon its ties to the rest of the world. I believe that Appiah would argue that any "Africanism" is not useful as a method of affirming culture, either, precisely because to be simply "an African" implies such a tremendous negation of one's own past.
I still want to know if Soyinka has also successfully divorced himself from a bogus Pan-Africanist and unianimist use of an "African" culture in his metaphors and references. Does he somehow successfully escape from the confines of this label with his individual-focused explorations (which are thus really Nigerian, or Yoruban?)
Also, how usefully can a philosophical agenda be furthered by an intellectual class focused on bipolarity? The implied bipolarity of African philosophers, working to justify themselves to the world while preserving the value of traditional discourse, seems in danger of trying too hard to mold tradition, and thus lose useful contact with traditional people.
Appiah questions "...the evaluative assumption that recovery of tradition is worthwhile," implying that it is not (95). This comment seems like an important and perhaps controversial one: is it really good for philosophers in Africa, if working to establish an agenda for future clarity and intelligibility for Africans, to be ready to dismiss recovering tradition in their countries and societies? The negative effects of tradition are many, but its benefits seem easily slighted.
Appiah's critique of the ethno philosophical response to modernity seems to leaves out the important fact that a new citizen of the world, as African citizen, is rapidly, and permanently, emerging - and that as people grow up separating themselves from tradition, tribalism and rural politics, they are reassessing their traditional background while trying to create an identity. Perhaps the ethno philosophy he criticizes is in fact an attempt at an honest reappraisal of tradition, for certainly all summaries of the condition of African traditions will end up preferentially consolidating these traditions.
The question is where in the African intellectual consciousness should fit the multi-lingual, multi-national views of tradition. I think to roundly press African intellectuals to serve the highest ideals of "their people" and guide them into a modernity that is not based on European models and yet also not based upon African tradition should be recognized as especially dangerous, as such a plan may well leave its chosen flock behind.
This book, for the density and complexity as well as honesty of its inquiry, should be seen as a sold introudction to what makes Africa so problematic on the level of identity and solidarity. The existence of an "african" identity can no longer be ignored. Appiah finds all the roots of this identity and gives them rigorous criticism in light of his own personal view of Africa as well as a solid reading of African philosophy, social science and history.

Remarkably astute

Appiah's book is insightful and powerful. His mastery of language allows for a philosophical chef d'oeuvre that reads with fluency comparable to a fine novel. Appiah's unique perspective as a quintessentially modern academic whose own life has bridged gaps between three continents imbues his writing with a freshness that will captivate any fine intellect. Truly a remarkable work.

IS THERE AN AFRICAN "PHILOSOPHY OF CULTURE" EMERGING?
By Steven H Propp
Kwame Anthony Appiah (born 1955) is a Ghanaian philosopher, cultural theorist, and novelist who is currently Professor of Philosophy at Princeton University. He is also author of books such as The Honor Code: How Moral Revolutions Happen, Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers (Issues of Our Time), The Ethics of Identity, Necessary Questions: An Introduction to Philosophy, and Thinking It Through: An Introduction to Contemporary Philosophy.

He states in the Preface to this 1992 book, "in thinking about culture, which is the subject of this book, one is bound to be formed---morally, aesthetically, politically, religiously---by the range of lives one has known... this is especially important because the book is about issues that are bound to be deeply personally important for anyone with my history; for its theme is the question how we are to think about Africa's contemporary cultures in the light both of the two main external determinants of her recent cultural history---European and Afro-New World conceptions of Africa---and of her own endogenous cultural traditions."

Here are some quotations from the book:

"The African-Americans whose work I discussed in Chapters 1 and 2 conceived their relation to Africa through the mediating concept of race, a concept they acquired from a Euro-American cultural matrix. As a result... it was inevitable that their answer to the question of African identity should have been rooted in the romantic racisms that have been so central to the European and American nationalisms of the past century and a half; and their thinking provided the starting point for those Africans who took up the banner of a Pan-Africanist black nationalism in the period since the Second World War." (Pg. 73)
"I have already said that there is no reason to think that the folk philosophies of Africa are uniform." (Pg. 92)
"Yet there is no doubt now, a century later, an African identity is coming into being. I have argued throughout these essays that this identity is a new thing; that it is the product of a history, some of whose moments I have sketched; and that the bases through which so far it has largely been theorized---race, a common historical experience, a shared metaphysics---presuppose falsehoods too serious for us to ignore." (Pg. 174)
