About the Author
Richard A. Gorton received his doctorate from Stanford University, majoring in school administration. His Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and his Master’s Degree in Counseling and Guidance were conferred by the University of Iowa. Dr. Gorton’s school experience includes teaching, counseling and guidance, and administration. He was Department Chairperson and Professor of Administrative Leadership and Supervision at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. He is currently a consultant with Gorton Associates in San Diego, California. A leader in state and national administrator orga-nizations, Dr. Gorton has collaborated on a national study of “the effective principal.” Because of his expertise and practical experience, he has frequently been called on as a consultant and workshop leader in the areas of teacher and administrator evaluation, in-service education, program evaluation, instructional supervision, student disciplinary problems, school-community relations, problem solving, and conflict resolution. Dr. Gorton has published two textbooks, two monographs, and over 100 articles, book reviews, and abstracts on a variety of topics related to educational administration and supervision, as well as education in general. Dr. Gorton’s other textbook for which he was senior author, School-Based Leadership. Challenges and Opportunities, is used in nu-merous university courses devoted to administrator preparation and by school districts for in-service education. He has also served as senior editor for The Ency-clopedia of School Administration and Supervision.

Judy A. Alston received her Ph.D. at the Pennsylvania State University, two master's degrees at the University of South Carolina, and her bachelor's degree in English from Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Prior to teaching in the academy, she was a high school English teacher/teacher-leader in the public school system in South Carolina. Currently Dr. Alston holds the positions of Associate Dean and Director of the Center for Education at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. Prior to joining Widener, she served as the Chair of the Division of Educational Administration and Leadership Studies at Bowling Green State University. Her research foci include gender and educational leadership with a focus on black female school superintendents; urban education and educational leadership highlighting administrative reform in urban schools; diversity and educational leadership exploring how the intersections of class, race/ethnicity, gender, sexual diversity, and ability affect leaders, and spirituality and leadership. She is the author of numerous articles and book chapters in these areas of research, as well as the author of Multi-leadership in Urban Schools.

Petra E. Snowden, received her Ph.D. in Urban Education/Educational Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she also earned a Master of Science degree in German Literature and a Bachelor of Science degree in French, German, and Secondary Education. At present, Dr. Snowden is Director of the Ph.D. in Urban Services/Urban Education Concentration at Old Dominion University in Norfolk VA. She is past coordinator of the alternative Norfolk Public Schools and Old Dominion University principal preparation program, Principal Leadership for Urban Schools, Co- director of the Danforth Tidewater Principal Preparation program, Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Services, and Associate Professor of Educational Administration at Old Dominion University. She founded the Principal Center at Old Dominion University and served as assessor, coach, and mentor for the Tidewater NASSP/Assessment Center. Her research and writing interests focus on linkages between schools, universities, and community service agencies, particularly as these structures affect the lives of vulnerable children, youth , and adults, non traditional principal preparation, and mentoring. She remains active presenting at national conferences and providing professional development seminars within school settings on topics such as school board and superintendent roles and responsibilities, program evaluation, and planning. In addition, Dr. Snowden served as president of the Hampton Roads YWCA and is an advocate for urban and women's issues. She is the author of numerous articles related to the improvement of school practices and has spoken on a variety of topics pertaining to educational training in community organizations, the "School as a Care Provider," and school leadership. She is completing a multilingual book on the identification of abused children in schools from a multicultural perspective, and the appropriate actions to be taken by principals, counselors, and teachers.

Finally, the case method applied to education

This is easily one of the most thought-provoking books on education that I've had the pleasure of reading. The first half is a general exploration of leadership in the school setting, but the second half is where the book truly shines--60 different case study activities that present real-world situations that appear in the course of the school day and challenge you to solve them. I learned a lot about my leadership style and what I needed to know to become a better leader by reading through them; I think it'd be an invaluable resource for anyone in the principalship.

School Leadership 101

I am using this book for a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. The writing is very straight forward and easy to understand. It talks about several models of leadership and how those concepts apply to Educational Administration. Each week, my class is reviewing the case studies in the book- which is interesting. They give the vignette, and ask the reader how they would solve the conflict of issue, as a leader.

Undaunted History

Great way to read about history. Not a big history buff and Howard makes it easy to follow this complicated subject and treats the players with respect and sensitivity. The older, used copy made it even better! They should make a movie about this story, and Johnny Depp can play Louis!

The amazing story of the Metis people whose French ancestors first colonized and controlled most of North America. Louis Riel should have been a National Hero for all Canadians since without him most of the land west of Ontario would have fallen in US hands.

This book is riveting and should be required reading for history majors.

In large measure, this book is the history of Louis Riel, a Metis leader, and his efforts to gain recognition and independence for the Metis people. Since the ethnic group usually called Metis was closely tied to Riel, the book is also a partial history of that group.

Metis is a French word that can be translated as "mixed blood." In a narrow sense, one might think of the Metis as the offspring from intermarriage between the French and Indians (mostly Cree) of eastern Canada during the early days of the fur trade. In a practical sense, the group must be broadened to include at least Chippewa, English, and Scot parentage. In the context of the twentieth century, an even broader definition is used. However, some combination of white and Indian linage is usually a prerequisite.

This book is a classic by a legendary author of Montana history. Joseph Kinsey Howard (1906-1951) is also known for another classic, "Montana: High, Wide, and Handsome," a book considered for decades as the definitive history of Montana. Howard spent much of his short life in an area of Montana that has a significant Metis population. He understood the Metis, respected them, and spent years preparing to write "Strange Empire."

The original publication was in 1952. More recent issues include an introduction by Nicholas C. P. Vrooman, Director of the Institute for Metis Studies at the College of Great Falls, Montana. This introduction is a magnificent addition.

The Metis were primarily a product of the fur trade. Their language was a hybrid of French and Indian; definitely not English. Most of the Metis communities remained in close contact with the local Indian tribes. Many of these mixed blood people were drawn to the Red River which flows north from the present states of Minnesota and North Dakota into Canada and on to Hudson Bay.

Louis Riel had trained for priesthood, but hadn't become a priest. Despite occasional self-doubt, Riel had many characteristics of leadership. He was literate and a good speaker and, more importantly, was fluent in English. The Metis attempted to establish their own nation in the Red River Valley. Howard beautifully summarizes the Metis situation: "This conflict between the Metis and the Canadian government was not only a battle over native and Euro-American claims, but also an age-old fight between Catholicism and Protestantism, English and French, English and Irish, and English and American causes." Louis Riel and the Red River Metis faced the Canadian forces with little loss of life on either side. Some people feel that the decision of whether the United States or Canada would rule what is now central and western Canada hung in the balance. The Metis won many of their goals but came under Canadian rule. One result is that the Red River part of Canada became the province of Manitoba in 1870. However, for his part in the "rebellion," Canada exiled Riel for five years and he went to the United States.

The Metis were buffalo hunters but were significantly different from Indians. They dressed differently. Many combined their hunting with agriculture. They had their own language. They had their own culture, a melding of the cultures from which they came. They were much more efficient at commercial buffalo hunting than were the Indians. Their background in the fur trade meant that they had the weapons, hunting experience, and trading expertise needed. Synonymous with the Metis is the Red River cart. Pulled by draft animals, it had high wheels and could carry several hundred pounds. With these carts, the Metis could transport the hides, pemmican, and dried meat of many buffalo to market locations. Twice yearly, the Metis gathered in a large force to go to the buffalo herds.

As the buffalo herds dwindled, the Metis went further west for their hunts. As a result, Metis communities developed in the Turtle Mountain area of North Dakota, the Milk River country of Montana, and Saskatchewan in Canada. Later, communities developed near Lewistown and Great Falls, Montana, (note that most of these locations were undeveloped, and probably unnamed, when the Metis first arrived). Louis Riel moved westward also and became a teacher at a mission in the area of Great Falls.

In Saskatchewan, the Metis were experiencing problems dealing with the Canadian government; problems very similar to what they had experienced in the Red River country. In 1884, the Canadian Metis appealed to Riel to serve as their leader and negotiator. Riel answered the call. Ultimately, an armed conflict evolved with the Canadian military and Mounties facing the Metis and their Indian allies. This time the Metis were crushed. Louis Riel was tried and hung.

There is disagreement concerning Riel's role in Saskatchewan. Some people feel he became insane, some dispute that opinion. He felt that God guided him and when a disagreement arose with the Catholic priests, he attempted to separate the Metis from the Catholic Church. The Metis uprising in Saskatchewan was probably doomed from the beginning, but Riel made things worse by his indecision between peaceful negotiations and the use of force.

In 1982, an amendment to the Canadian constitution gave the Metis aboriginal rights. In the United States, the Metis do not have a legal relationship with the government and do not have a reservation or enjoy other rights granted to Native Americans. In each recent session of the U.S. Congress, there have been bills concerning what is often termed Montana's Landless Indians. Many of this group are Metis.

This book reads almost like a novel. It is well researched. Every book published since "Strange Empire" and containing a mention of the Metis, references Howard's book. A comprehensive and modern history of the Metis is needed but at the moment, this reviewer is unaware of anything near as useful as "Strange Empire."

Kate Gosselin, I Just Want YOU To Know.......

that I am sitting here in complete disbelief at what I am reading. I was looking forward to reading your new book titled "I Just Want You To Know: Letters To My Children on Faith, Love and Family", yet what I am reading is "How Hard Kate Gosselin Has Had It Raising 8 Children, Part 3".

This is another Kate Gosselin book about Kate Gosselin and how hard life is for Kate Gosselin.{{{ Yawn }}}

She clearly used her children to sell the book by including them in the title and tossing in 8 short letters, but the majority is the same old woe-is-me hullabulla that has run out of gas 1000 miles ago. If I were a Gosselin child and read this book when I was older, I'd probably feel confused as heck about the purpose of it. I so wanted to see a new side of Kate through this new book, but sadly it's the same old tired story of sacrifices she made as a mother...the same sacrifices most mothers make for their children that aren't unique to her only. Her children should be convinced of her love for them through her daily actions, not through words desperately scrawled on a couple pages in a book. Something is really beginning to smell wrong with this whole picture. Felt more like she is trying to convince herself and the public that she loves her children, more than convincing the children themselves.

I will give her credit for the touching discussion of her grandparents. That was about the only portion of the book that felt genuine and heartfelt. She didn't turn that memory around to be all about her or how hard it was for her to be their granddaughter. That portion of the book was sweet and enjoyable to read. It showed me she does have a soft spot in there somewhere that doesn't like to show itself very often.

I just read the book. I don't get it.

As the children struggle through the aftermath of their parent's public and painful divorce, this new book by Kate Gosselin, rather than insulating them, exposes their fears and vulnerabilities. This book is certainly different, but not in a good way. She must earn a living, but why not write a cookbook or a book of helpful hints for other mothers and permit her children to heal in privacy? Gosselin has spent so much time in the limelight showcasing her children, that normal boundaries most parents establish do not appear to exist in her universe.

Balance is sadly lacking and discretion is non-existent. Each child is dissected - identifying who is naughty, who is acting out the most, who is in the most pain from the divorce, who doesn't speak up for themselves, who is missing their father the most, etc. All is revealed in a dispassionate tone, largely devoid of a mother's usual pride in her children's accomplishments and gifts. Positives are noted in the context of how the behaviors help the mother. Which children are artistic or musical or athletic is nowhere to be found.

The book is composed of tedious background material which reads like self-absorbed filler and is interspersed with outspoken letters to each child, bible verses and photographs of the children. The letters contain material too sensitive and too personal for strangers to be rummaging about, picking through various revealing, hurtful or embarrassing pronouncements by their mother.

Contradicting the purpose of the book, throughout the pages, Gosselin's focus is on herself, not the children. Rather than preserving memories for her adorable brood, the book is about all she has done and all she has sacrificed for them. In the book she states that the children are her most precious belongings. I think those words may explain everything. Children are not belongings. Well, most children are not belongings.

Disgraceful!

This book is a terrible exploitation of the Gosselin children, I would give it zero stars if that was possible. If Kate Gosselin wants to impart her thoughts to her kids instead of putting such personal things in a book for strangers to read maybe she could consider being at home with them and telling them in person. Her words say one thing but her deeds say the opposite,don't waste your money on this book.

Valuable book for workers in the field of phase unwrapping

This book is a very specialized book and is of little interest to most readers, but for readers working in the field of phase unwrapping this book is a must. This book gives methods of solving phase unwrapping problems. Four path-following and four minimum-norm techniques are described. A detailed analysis is presented for each algorithm. The distinctive feature of each algorithm is given and the algorithms are ranked in terms of their execution times, memory requirements, and successes and failures on the phase unwrapping examples. Guidelines are given for deciding which algorithm applies to a given problem. A suite of C language programs and routines comprising over 6000 lines of source code that implement the ideas and algorithms discussed in the book, and data sets, can be downloaded from the Wiley FTP site.

Pleasantly surprised on the effectiveness of this book

As a "I was born late, been late ever since" kind of gal I know a thing or two about procrastination. But I never really knew why I procrastinated.

I have read tons of productivity books such as Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity (my favorite of all of them), The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, etc. And although most are great at helping you set up a system, they don't really help you get and STAY motivated. Of course, I always get a boost after reading a wonderful get up and go book, I just find myself after a month or even a week losing my way.

That is until I read this book.

I have been so, so, so much more productive the last few months. I was trying to figure out why and it donned on me it was this book! For the first time in my life, I find myself stopping to see why I'm procrastinating on something. It may not sound like a big thing but that one act of figuring out what it is that is preventing me from doing what I need/want to do enables me to actually do it!

Even the fact that I'm actually filling out a review just shows you that I'm not procrastinating any more (I always say I'm going to leave a review for any product I buy on Amazon since its the reviews that help me in purchasing products - you know - give back).

I didn't follow the 2 step program in the back of the book so I can't attest to the efficacy of that program. But considering how impactful just reading the book is, I'm sure its great.

Excellent, Invaluable Resource

This has to be the best book on managing your time I've ever read. It's not just tips and time management, it helps you understand what you're doing and why, getting to the source of the problem so you're more self-aware during the act. As any procrastinator knows, time management is not the real problem, not entirely. It helps you target the ways you procrastinate and different types of procrastinators, from those who are perfectionists to those who passive-aggressively procrastinate to feel like they have more control over their time. I read this as a companion book to The Now Habit by Neil Fiore a few months ago, and in combination I'm finally getting a handle on managing all the things I want to do. I've revisited my notes again and again and am using the strategies that work for me daily.
