Why are some parts of the world poor today, while others are rich? At which point in time did they diverge, and what were the reasons? These core questions are addressed in a concise and accessible introduction to global economic development since 1500. Leading economic historians from across the globe provide overviews of major world regions together with global comparison chapters and case studies highlighting key themes, individuals, processes and events. Utilising a set of common developmental indicators, the chapters address crucial issues such as how international trade and migration, institutions and flows of physical and human capital impacted economic growth. Richly illustrated with informative figures, maps, tables and charts, A History of the Global Economy summarises the key economic findings, debates and ideas, and provides students and the interested public with an up-to-date and engaging introduction to the origins and evolution of today's global economy.

Economic history beyond "the West" and industrial growth
By Amazon Kunde
I purchased this book to expand the syllabus for my lecture on World Economic History, as I sought to give more weight to the history of economic and human development in Latin America, Asia and Africa. This work provides an excellent overview on the economic history of these regions, and proved to be stimulating in a number of ways. First, it does give equal weight to Europe and other areas that are often neglected by economic-history textbooks: for example, it contains an excellent chapter discussing economic and social development in pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial Africa, something which is often missing in other books. Secondly, the approach to economic and human development really is multifaceted and rich: not only the reader will be offered the most up-to-date standard measures of economic growth and purchasing power such as per capita GDP and real wages; the book also presents very fresh research on alternative indices of well-being and the quality of living in the long run: numeracy and human capital, human stature, democratic institutions and schooling are all discussed in order to provide a truly comprehensive overview on long-term growth and development. Finally, the book is widely accessible: although it aims at audiences in academia, the use of effective maps and simple data and graphs, together with the fact that it is made of relatively short chapters, makes it a good companion for anyone who wishes to broaden their understanding of economic history in a more global perspective.

will transform your view of the past
By John Komlos
The fact that globalization is a controversial and at the same time one of the most salient subject in academia as well as in policy circles makes this magisterial volume a most significant contribution to understanding the roots, mainsprings, and outlines of the global economy’s development in the very long run. A select group of the top contributors to this literature from around the globe weave a convincing narrative of the cutting-edge research that also includes avant-guard perspectives on numeracy, anthropometric history, inequality, and human capital formation. Exhaustive historic data have been painstakingly unearthed from dusty archives and combined with careful historical and economic analysis in order to buttress our understanding of how we arrived at our globalized world of the 21st century. This collection of masterful studies will definitely transform how you view the past and remain an essential read and not only in economics and history for a very long time to come.
John Komlos, Professor Emeritus, University of Munich.

the book could be useful. My favorite part were some instructive maps illustrating ...
By Tony Meyer
The book consists of several highly specialized essays, by different authors e.g., 'Property rights in the Russian empire', 'Women in global economic history' and, 'Pre-history ancient and classical periods of southeast Asia.' If one is interested in these specific economic topics, the book may prove useful. There are some instructive maps illustrating economic specialization in the Middle-East and South America. Personally i would not recommend the book; the reading is somewhat dry. Maybe should give it two stars instead? The title of the book is misleading. There are large parts of the world and long historical gaps / periods that are not covered at all.
