A Treasure

This book is a beautiful piece of work. My parents had this book and I spent many wonderful hours enjoying the pictures in it. This book has been in my family for at least fifty years. My brother has that copy. I was fortunate enough to get an exact duplicate of it for myself. I feel as if an old friend returned to me.

An Interesting Early Color Art Book

When I was about 12, at least 37 years ago, I first checked out "World Famous Paintings" from the Great Falls, Montana, public library. Since I had no opportunity to buy a copy, I kept checking it out again and again. It was already old, but there were other books in the art section that were older. The color illustrations were printed on clay-coated paper and glued onto the pages at the top border, making them a temptation to thieves. The rest of the book is on much cheaper, pulpier stock, but the paper has held up well on every copy I've seen.
When it was new, it must have been an expensive book, made to adorn the coffee tables of the rich. Don't look for much biographical or historical material; Rockwell Kent prefers to write something romantic or poetic (often literally; sometimes the only comment on a painting is an excerpt from a poem). Surprisingly, considering it's written by an artist, there isn't much technical commentary here, either.
When I got older, I saw several copies in used book stores. Few of them had the original dust jacket, which tended to be torn and frayed with decades of handling. It's no loss; the white cover is much more elegant and tasteful anyway. It never cost very much, but I held out until I found a copy with a well-preserved dust jacket for $10.
The most interesting thing about this book is the color photos, some of which are undoubtedly the first published ones for their respective paintings. Here, and nowhere else I know, can you find a color photo of Leonardo's "Last Supper" as it appeared before its postwar cleaning, and here you can see a beautiful color photo of Velasquez' "Rokeby Venus" before a brutal cleaning stripped away her flesh tones.
Kent's prose can be sentimental and fatuous, but he obviously loved great art. And if you do, too, you want to own a copy of this fascinating and surprisingly inexpensive book.

Missed the "Boat"

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the previous books about Barker & Llewelyn this is obviously a "gimme" book. That is when an author or artist who has done excellent work in the past passes off something much inferior as a money maker based on his previous reputation. No great plot, no depth, no nothing. Just string some events together without much thought and sell it based on your reputation but not living to to your reputation. Quick and easy money. Hopefully if there are to be further books in this series they will be worth reading.

A taut closed-door murder mystery

In the eighth Barker and Llewellyn mystery (Some Danger Involved: A Novel, To Kingdom Come: A Novel, The Limehouse Text: A Novel, The Hellfire Conspiracy (Barker & Llewelyn, No. 4), The Black Hand: A Barker & Llewelyn Novel, Fatal Enquiry: A Barker & Llewelyn Novel, Anatomy of Evil: A Barker & Llewelyn Novel) Barker and Llewellyn find themselves in a "locked room murder" - hired to act as body guards and stranded on an island off the coast of Land's End, someone is murdering the guests. Reminiscent of Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians, Thomas creates a taut mystery that kept me guessing until the final pages of the story.

The gradual unraveling of the backstories of the guests (the better to discover a motive), all while guests one-by-one end up murdered added an element of suspense to a well-crafted mystery. As with the previous books in the series, Lewellyn's voice and perspective (somewhat reminiscent of Watson to Barker's Holmes) was fun - light, a bit witty, and (mostly) observant in catching details ... I was able to figure out most of the whodunit by the end of the story.

I give it four stars because there was so little of the interaction and banter between Lewellyn and Barker (relative to previous stories) and even less backstory to Barker or relation and connection to contemporary events - elements that Thomas previously has intertwined into his writing, and which make the reading both more believable and entertaining. Still, I found it to be a tremendous read. I am very much looking forward to more by this author.

Island house party gone very wrong -- murder and intrigue!!

The format of this book is different than the other books in the series. Once you figure that out, just strap in for the ride. I loved this book! It's very Agatha Christie-esque with everyone being trapped on a basically deserted island and a mysterious sniper picking people off one by one. Barker and Llewelyn are hired as security for a house party that turns deadly and violent!

My only observation -- although I love the cover of this book, to me it doesn't have much to do with the plot. I had no idea before I started the book that almost all of the action takes place in a secluded island mansion. Not that it would have affected anything since I have read and enjoyed all the books in this series, just an observation.

If you enjoy this book, I recommend the other books in the series as well.

Fluid Dynamics: Theory, Computation, and Numerical Simulation is the only available book that extends the classical field of fluid dynamics into the realm of scientific computing in a way that is both comprehensive and accessible to the beginner. The theory of fluid dynamics, and the implementation of solution procedures into numerical algorithms, are discussed hand-in-hand and with reference to computer programming. This book is an accessible introduction to theoretical and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), written from a modern perspective that unifies theory and numerical practice.

There are several additions and subject expansions in the Second Edition of Fluid Dynamics, including new Matlab and FORTRAN codes. Two distinguishing features of the discourse are: solution procedures and algorithms are developed immediately after problem formulations are presented, and numerical methods are introduced on a need-to-know basis and in increasing order of difficulty. Matlab codes are presented and discussed for a broad range of topics; from interfacial shapes in hydrostatics, to vortex dynamics, to Stokes flow, to turbulent flow.

A supplement to this book is the FORTRAN software library FDLIB, freely available through the Internet, whose programs explicitly illustrate how computational algorithms translate into computer code instructions. The codes of FDLIB range from introductory to advanced, and the problems considered span a broad range of applications; from laminar channel flows, to vortex flows, to flows in aerodynamics. Selected computer problems at the end of each section ask the student to run the programs for various flow conditions, and thereby study the effect of the various parameters determining each flow.

This text is a must for practitioners and students in all fields of engineering, computational physics, scientific computing, and applied mathematics. It can be used as a text in both undergraduate and graduate courses in fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, and computational fluid dynamics. The audience includes not only advanced undergraduate and entry-level graduate students, but also a broad class of scientists and engineers with a general interest in scientific computing.

4th edition, For the amateur Web designer moving to freelancing

This book is designed to help a design amateur who knows the basics of HTML/CSS and using Photoshop to setting up their own freelancing operation. In its fourth edition it deprecates nested-table design (mentioned in many reviews) in favor of CSS-based layout designs. It includes a large number of templates from the 1st-3rd edition that use nested table design and are designed for smaller monitors. The author states that he has included these templates as a way to help "inspire" CSS-based layout designs based on the principles illustrated by the table-based designs. It's confusing at first flick, especially if you don't know what nested tables are or how they used to be used in the earlier days of the Web, when browsers were much more erratic in their CSS support.

The author continues to used the term "mortised" sites in this edition, which is also confusing at first flick, because the definition for the term has changed in the author's mind from what I gather from the reviews was the meaning it had in the 1st-3rd editions. In this edition, "mortised sites" are more simply defined as sites that are NOT built according to two other perspectives: sites that disdain using images and design principles and sites that try to be as artistic as possible in their design. Apparently, "mortised design" used to mean carefully-designed sites that used nested tables and image tricks to make them look as if they were not based on nested tables.

Perhaps the web community today needs a good term for carefully-built sites that use images and design principles with and eye to functionality and ease of use for most users -- I wouldn't know. Understanding, however, what a "mortise and tenon joint" was before reading the book did not help me understand what "mortised design" was in this edition -- the term has practically no intuitive value in CSS-based web design today.

I bought this book because I'm a complete design amateur and I wanted a way to see how the professional design process works. I also wanted a few ideas on the best way to structure my own website(s) in the future. This book delivered.

If you can, buy the e-book. The author discusses color and images in depth -- these discussions are seriously undermined by the fact that the paper book is not printed in color.

Good investment.

This is decent if you're trying to get a grip on the design aspect.. There's examples that you can practice that really help you understand how all the HTML and CSS eventually fit together to form something nice. I recommend finding something else as a complement to give you some study guide on the general HTML tags as defined, and the same for CSS styles.
