Good read for parents of "Entertainment Children"

Robert Pafundi gave me a copy of his book when it was first released, and I offered to provide my feedback. I wanted to write a review as well, because I was simply blown away by how much information was packed into these 250+ pages. Robert uses language that is easy to understand, which helps those of us who don't come from a legal background. Having complex information explained in 'normal' terms made this an easy and very informative read. I'm currently about halfway through, but I wanted to post my thoughts thus far, and (at this point) recommend it to anyone who has children in entertainment, who may someday have children in entertainment, or who would like to know more about the industry at large.

First, I admit I'm not in the industry at all. My Entertainment knowledge comes from watching movies/TV, which is probably the worst way to learn the business. And yet, this book was very well written, and provided me with a huge amount of insight into the Entertainment industry.

I've watched the HBO show Entourage (perhaps you have too), and I never understood the difference between Talent Agents and Talent Managers. Part I of this book explained that difference (which is primarily that Agents can secure work for clients, while Managers are more focused on career). Immediately, this book had taught me something new, and I was drawn in and ready to learn more.

In Part II, I read more about contracts and negotiation, and how to use them to your (or your child's) advantage. These chapters were full of advice to parents on what to sign and how to make sure you and your child are protected. Part III continued this even more, but the most interesting part (to me) was the 'opt out' clause, allowing you/your child or the manager to opt out of a contract that doesn't benefit one or both of you. Of course, the opt-out clause can be positive or negative, so Robert discusses many situations in which you would or would not want to sign a contract with this clause.

Part IV talks about compensation, which is an enormous topic. I'm currently reading through part IV and absorbing the information. Honestly, I find it crazy how contracts and compensation work in Hollywood, since I'm used to jobs with a simple paycheck every couple weeks.

So far, I think I echo many other reviewers here. If your child ever moves into the entertainment industry, this book can give you all the basic information you need to make informed decisions on hiring Agents, Managers, and Attorneys. You can learn about how contracts work and how you'll get paid. I would definitely recommend this book.

Great Book! This is a must have for any serious child performer families.

Rob Pafundi has written the first book of it's kind. A book that explains the unexplainable. Often in show biz, parents have no idea what to expect, until they are in way over their heads. This book provides answers to all the usual questions, but then takes the subject matter all the way down the road, answering all the "what if" scenarios you can think of. What if my child books a hit Television Series? What if my child makes it big and we want to change representation mid stream? What if we want to get out of our contract? What if I get sued by my manager? These are real scenarios, written by a real pro. Children In Film strongly supports Rob Pafundi's momumental achievement in "Safe Stardom: How to protect your Children on Their Road to Fame".

Fantastic read (not just for parents)

Although much of Safe Stardom is intended for the parents of child actors, as a 22 year old actor who is just breaking into the industry, I found both the writing and information to be extremely helpful with the important decisions I am making. At this time in my career, it is essential to know things like how the union operates, what having representation actually means, and how to protect myself from signing a contract that does not have my best interests in mind. All of these things and more are covered in the book in a thorough, yet relatable way. I would recommend this book to any aspiring actor, or parent of a child actor. It is not only a fun read, but I believe it is incredibly important to anyone who is trying to make it in the film industry.

Cute Story - 3 1/2 Stars

Alright, so this was a cute if somewhat forgettable story. We have a a hero who trusts no one, uber-wealthy and drop dead gorgeous, and a down-on-your-luck heroine. Pretty much like every other Harlequin romance in existence. He came from abject poverty to a man of immeasurable wealth, but no one can ever know where he came from and the mystery of him is part of his social allure. Grace is still in abject poverty and their first meeting occurs when Rocco catches her pilfering food from the buffet. I thought that was an unusual meet-cute and I give Ms Green points for originality there.

When Grace's brother absconds with a million dollars of Rocco's money, Rocco holds her prisoner and a bargaining chip to lure her brother out of hiding. And that's where Ms Green lost me. In the first place, all the reasons Rocco used as an excuse to keep her made little sense to me. If Grace was in on the plot, she wouldn't have gone to the scene of the crime looking for her brother when everyone was still there. Asking security personnel if they'd seen him. Made no sense. And in the second place, holding someone against their will would be a lot bigger deal in the eyes of the law and the public than if the public found out someone was able to steal from Rocco. Because what we are to believe is that Rocco refused to get the authorities involved because if word of the embezzlement were to leak out, people would not trust him with their money. But he was less concerned about word leaking out that he kidnapped and held prisoner a homeless woman.

But I get it. The plot needed some reason for Grace to stay in Rocco's company to get the romance part of the story going. I just wished it would have been something more believable.

I felt the author tried to develop the characters, but the story and their backgrounds still came off a bit disjointed, but that usually happens when an author has a lot of information to get into those 180 pages. So I understand that.

As for the characters, one couldn't help but to feel sorry for Grace. Her life and background were so terrible. Rocco I think tried his best to come off as a hard nosed a(insert letters here)hole, but there was just enough decency in him that he didn't quite make it. And that's a good thing.

A cute, fast paced read.

This is another of the loosely linked series of alpha billionaires and the women who capture them. Rocco de Marco has baggage and plans for the future that don't include the kind of young woman who filches food from the buffet. Even if he finds himself attracted to her.

Gracie is only interested in one man. Her brother who grew up with her in adverse circumstances and needs to make a fresh start. Her focus, like many of Green's heroines, is independence through her special talent. So when her brother is in trouble, the worst news is that his boss, said Rocco de Marco, intends to use her to find him.

And while they are stuck together, that attraction becomes a liability for two people who at first glance have no future together.

This is a very moving story and very engaging as we watch Rocco and Gracie did deep to find out who they are and unleash emotions hidden for years.

This is a very satisfying read with a trademark Abby Green epilogue for a sneak peak into the future.

My goodness but this was angsty

As other reviews have said the h is held by the H because he is suspicious that she is involved in her brothers embezzlement of money from his company. I struggled with the H, he was alpha but also had a really vicious streak in him too. He belittled the h on a number of occasions.

He didn't trust her right up until the very end and although the ending redeemed the book enough for me to give it 3 stars, I was still annoyed by a number of things that happened throughout the book. I hated the way he wanted to marry someone socially acceptable to make himself feel better about himself. It was difficult to like him after some of the things he said and did to the H.

His final abuse of her near the end of the book made me really hate him and although the author wrote a fairly good ending it didn't make me love this book.

Reclaims psychology as an Enlightenment science that can serve our collective interests

“Psychology and Capitalism” by Ron Roberts is a highly accessible critique of psychology and its current servitude to capitalism. Dr. Roberts is a chartered psychologist, college professor and author who has written authoritatively on the topic of psychology for many years. This insightful book will enlighten readers about how the corporate state seeks to make worker’s minds safe for capitalism.

Dr. Roberts briefly discusses psychology’s history as a science developed by the elite who had become uneasy about the rapidly urbanizing spaces of early capitalism. We learn how modern day psychology’s obsessive focus on internal thoughts and behaviors has reinforced the capitalist ethic of selfish individualism. Dr. Roberts sharply criticizes the psychology profession’s close ties to the military/industrial complex and its unethical relationship with big business. Dr. Roberts wonders if psychology’s complicity in engineering mass illusion has made it nearly impossible for us to rationally take stock of our unique moment in history and speak truth to power.

Dr. Roberts draws on the great Marxist thinkers Michel Foucault and Eric Fromm to reclaim psychology as an Enlightenment science that can serve our collective interests. We are reminded that Foucault analyzed how language, discourse and power can shape our perceptions; while Fromm recognized psychology’s value as a tool to advance our human potential. Accordingly, Dr. Roberts encourages us to throw off our chains by engaging in an open, constructive dialogue about capitalism's oppressive tendencies. In this way, we will understand that many problems do not originate within us (as corporate psychology would have us believe). Dr. Roberts asserts that a robust moral and political debate may yet open psychology to new, more humane possibilities including love, imagination and art.

This is an extraordinary work which recounts the history of modern capitalism through the historically unique energized of the cotton industry, from the level of indigenous subsistence agriculture and fabric production to that of modern times. It is astounding how global was the participation in the development of this commercial powerhouse.

This is a work which can teach economics and history with one, skilled brush. It is an accessible read and I recommend it to anyone with a sincere interest in world history, global economics and issues of social justice.
